It is essential to intensify research on the strike-slip tectonic system in West and Central Africa to better understand regional tectonic evolution and achieve future breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration.Based on the structural interpretation of extensive seismic data and stratigraphic paleontological analysis of more than 50 wells, this study investigated the tectonic history, sedimentary filling, and evolution of the rift basins in the West and Central Africa, and identified a novel type of intraplate strike-slip tectonic system. It exhibits the following characteristics:(i) the strike-slip tectonic system in the West and Central Africa consists of the Central African Shear Zone(CASZ) and two rift branches, manifesting as an N-shape;(ii) most of basins and rifts are characterized by rapid subsidence at one end and substantial sedimentary thickness;(iii) two types of strike-slip basins are developed, namely the transform-normal extensional basin(TEB) along CASZ and the strike-slip-induced extensional basin(SEB) at each end of CASZ;(iv) two types of basins display their own temporal and spatial evolution history. TEBs underwent two rifting stages during the Early and Late Cretaceous, with a strong inversion at the end of the Late Cretaceous. SEBs experienced three rifting stages, i.e., the Early Cretaceous, Late Cretaceous, and Paleogene, with a weak inversion;and(v) this strike-slip tectonic system was formed under intraplate divergent field, indicating a new type of system. This discovery enhances understanding of the breakup of Gondwana and provides valuable guidance for future oil and gas exploration. 展开更多

Based on seismic, drilling, and source rock analysis data, the petroleum geological characteristics and future exploration direction of the oil-rich sags in the Central and West African Rift System(CWARS)are discussed. The study shows that the Central African Rift System mainly develops high-quality lacustrine source rocks in the Lower Cretaceous, and the West African Rift System mainly develops high-quality terrigenous organic matter-rich marine source rocks in the Upper Cretaceous, and the two types of source rocks provide a material basis for the enrichment of oil and gas in the CWARS.Multiple sets of reservoir rocks including fractured basement and three sets of regional cap rocks in the Lower Cretaceous, the Upper Cretaceous, and the Paleogene are developed in the CWARS.Since the Late Mesozoic, due to the geodynamic factors including the dextral strike-slip movement of the Central African Shear Zone, the basins in different directions of the CWARS differ in terms of rifting stages, intervals of regional cap rocks, trap types and accumulation models. The NE-SW trending basins have mainly preserved one stage of rifting in the Early Cretaceous, with regional cap rocks developed in the Lower Cretaceous strata, forming traps of reverse anticlines,flower-shaped structures and basement buried hill, and two types of hydrocarbon accumulation models of"source and reservoir in the same formation, and accumulation inside source rocks"and"up-source and down-reservoir,and accumulation below source rocks".The NW–SE basins are characterized by multiple rifting stages superimposition, with the development of regional cap rocks in the Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene, forming traps of draping anticlines, faulted anticlines, antithetic fault blocks and the accumulation model of"down-source and up-reservoir,and accumulation above source rocks".The combination of reservoir and cap rocks inside source rocks of basins with multiple superimposed rifting stages,as well as the lithologic reservoirs and the shale oil inside source rocks of strong inversion basins are important fields for future exploration in basins of the CWARS. 展开更多

Purpose:The collaboration relationships between innovation actors at a geographic level may be considered as grouping two separate layers, the domestic and the foreign. At the level of each layer, the relationships and the actors involved constitute a Triple Helix game. The paper distinguished three levels of analysis:the global grouping together all actors, the domestic grouping together domestic actors, and the foreign related to only actors from partner countries.Design/methodology/approach:Bibliographic records data from the Web of Science for South Korea and West Africa breakdown per innovation actors and distinguishing domestic and international collaboration are analyzed with game theory. The core, the Shapley value, and the nucleolus are computed at the three levels to measure the synergy between actors.Findings:The synergy operates more in South Korea than in West Africa;the government is more present in West Africa than in South Korea;domestic actors create more synergy in South Korea, but foreign more in West Africa;South Korea can consume all the foreign synergy, which is not the case of West Africa.Research limitations:Research data are limited to publication records;techniques and methods used may be extended to other research outputs.Practical implications:West African governments should increase their investment in science, technology, and innovation to benefit more from the synergy their innovation actors contributed at the foreign level. However, the results of the current study may not be sufficient to prove that greater investment will yield benefits from foreign synergies.Originality/value:This paper uses game theory to assess innovation systems by computing the contribution of foreign actors to knowledge production at an area level. It proposes an indicator to this end. 展开更多

Diamonds on the Earth mainly occur in volcanic rocks such as kimberlites and lamproites^([1-8]),but can also be found in ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks^([9-10]),meteorites^([11])and alluvial deposits^([12]).In recent years, diamonds have been recovered from ophiolites^([13-16])and alkalic dolerites^([17-18]).The discovery of ophiolitic diamonds and alkalic dolerites diamonds has drawn significant research interests to explore the origin of this new class of diamond source and to infer the evolution of their hosting rocks[^(19-21)].This new type of diamond had been initially considered as a result of contamination. However, more and more evidences either directly or indirectly demonstrate that these diamonds are of natural origin^([16,18,19,22-24]).During a geological survey from 2012 to 2015,the geologists from Nanjing Centre of China Geological Survey discovered a large number of yellow microdiamonds in the Langan area in northern Anhui Province^([18,25-29]).The diamond-bearing rocks of these microdiamonds mainly include dolerite and olivine basalt. From 2016 to 2018,four microdiamonds in basic rocks were recovered again in the prospecting work for primary diamond deposits in the Tashan and Zhangji areas in Xuzhou, which is geographically close to Langan[30].All these microdiamonds are similar in colour and shape to ophiolite type diamonds^([31]),and show different characteristics of kimberlite and lamproite type diamonds.Cai,et al.(2019)reported the petrological characteristics of the diamondiferous rocks^([17,21,30]).In this paper, the morphology, infrared spectrum, and carbon isotope compositions of microdiamonds were analysed and discussed by Fourier infrared spectroscopy and carbon isotope test. The types of microdiamonds found in the North China Craton, the age of mantle occurrence, and the source of carbon isotopes were revealed. In the past, many deposits of macro-diamonds,mostly of TypeⅠa orⅡa,were found in the North China Craton, and they have been extensively studied.Microdiamonds recovered from the alkalic dolerites of the North China Craton were studied by FTIR and carbon isotopic. These diamonds are usually light yellow to yellow, with a few colourless, and cubic, octahedral or rhomboidal dodecahedron, and octahedron in shape. The surface characteristics of diamonds, such as dissolution, can be observed. The overall N concentration is not high, with an average of 173×10^(-6).The infrared spectra show that most of these diamonds are TypeⅠb,and C centres are found at 1344 cm^(-1).Three diamond samples are classified as TypeⅠa/Ⅰb,because of A centres and C centres in these diamonds. Two diamonds are classified as typeⅠaAB because B,B′and A centres are found co-existing.FTIR microscopic measurements from the core to the edge of the TypeⅠaAB diamond suggest a mantle residence time of approximately 550 Ma.The C isotopic analysis reveals that these diamonds are strongly depleted in 13 C.These lowδ^(13) C values of dolerites-hosted diamonds overlap with the lower ends of peridotitic diamonds and metamorphic diamonds, and the upper end of the ophiolitic diamonds.Additionally, the reason for the strong deficitδ^(13) C shown by the carbon isotope should be studied in the future. 展开更多

On the basis of the present situation of oil and gas exploration and geological research of the west slope in the northern Songliao Basin, the factors controlling reservoir formation, oil and gas migration and accumulation, have been re-examined from the aspects of structure, deposition and reservoir formation. The results show that:(1) The west slope is a gentle slope which overlaps to the west, and nose structure is developed near the hydrocarbon generation depression, which is in the dominant direction area of hydrocarbon migration. A series of NE structural belts are developed on the slope and are favorable places for oil and gas accumulation.(2) The west slope can be further divided into the upper slope and the lower slope, and there are many kinds of oil and gas reservoirs, including structural, structural-lithologic and lithologic ones. In the upper slope, the major oil layer is Sartu controlled by structure;in the lower slope, multi-layers are oil-bearing, and the oil reservoirs are mostly composite ones.(3) Faults, unconformity surfaces and continuous sand bodies are the main channels of oil and gas migration;structure, sand body and fault jointly control the oil and gas enrichment in the slope;and the matching relationship between micro-amplitude and sand body, small fault and sand body control the oil and gas accumulation. On the basis of the above research, fine identification and effectiveness evaluation technology of composite trap has been developed through extensive study. Combination traps were identified by multiple technologies, including fault classification, micro-amplitude structure identification, fine sedimentation research, and lithologic trap identification by waveform indication inversion;and then the configuration relationship between fault and sand body, structural amplitude and sand body were analyzed to set up the evaluation criteria of effective traps. According to the criteria, the traps were selected to enhance the exploration success rate. 展开更多

Silver fir(Abies alba Mill.)is a flexible European tree species, mainly vegetating within the mountainous regions of Europe, but its growth responses across its latitudinal and longitudinal range have not yet been satisfactorily verified under changing environmental conditions. This study describes the tree-ring increment of silver fir in research plots across a latitudinal gradient from the northern range in Czechia(CZ),through Croatia(HR)to the southernmost range in Italy(IT).The research aims to analyze in detail the dynamics and cyclicity of the ringwidth index(RWI)and how it relates to climatic factors(temperature and precipitation),the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO),and total solar irradiance(TSI),including the determination of latitude. The results show that the main drivers affecting fir growth are the seasonal NAO index and TSI.Monthly temperatures affect RWI early in the vegetation season, while lack of precipitation during the summer is a limiting factor for fir growth, especially in July.Seasonal temperatures and temperatures in June and July negatively impact, while seasonal precipitation totals in the same months positively influence the RWI in all research plots across meridian. The longest growth cycles in fir RWI were recorded in the northernmost studied plots in CZ.These cyclical fluctuations recede approaching the south. The cyclic increase in RWI is related to the TSI,which decreases its effect from north to south. The TSI's effects vary, positively impacting CZ but negatively influencing HR while remaining relatively neutral in IT.On the other hand, seasonal NAO tends to negatively affect silver fir growth in HR and CZ but has a mildly positive effect in IT.In conclusion, the TSI and the influence of the seasonal NAO index are prevalent in the fir RWI and are accompanied by a greater cyclicity of RWI in Central Europe(temperature optimum)than in the Italian Mediterranean region, where this tree species is limited by climatic conditions, especially lack of precipitation. 展开更多

Sun (Araliaceae) is a critically endangered, medicinal plant of North-East India. The objective of this study was to determine how plant size affects flowering phenology and to evaluate the effect of climatic factors on flowering, fruiting and seed production. Data on vegetative and repro- ductive characters were monitored from 2016 individuals of Panax wangianus population in Law Lyngdoh, Smit sacred grove in Nongkrem, Shillong, India. Leaflet area was measured by a planimeter. Size variables of both vegetative and reproductive traits in different age classes were measured. Climatic factors were recorded from 2007 to 2009. Age was recorded by counting the number of bud scale scars on the rhizome. Light intensity and relative humidity were measured using a photometer, LiCor Model LI-189 and thermohygrometer respectively. Different climatic variables are correlated with vegetative and reproductive phenological events. Statistical analysis revealed that a strong positive correlation was observed between the age versus vegetative and reproductive characters, except 1%–2% plants showed neoteny. Morphological variations were observed in natural conditions on the basis of the number of prong and carpellate conditions. Phenological status revealed that most of the individuals of the age class 35–50 years and above 50 years contributed the most to flowering, fruiting and seed production. Age class was significant to predict the size of the plant and its reproductive capacity. Climatic factors such as temperature, precipitation and relative humidity show synergistic effect on both the vegetative and reproductive phases in Panax wangianus in the undisturbed Nongkrem sacred grove. The color of flowers of P. wangianus also varied depending upon the sunlight intensity. Therefore, in the view of conservationand management, the age class of 35–50 years and above 50 years is the most important for population sustainability. 展开更多

The observed tropospheric biennial oscillation (TBO) in the western North Pacific (WNP) monsoon region has an interdecadal variability with a period of 40-50 yr. That suggests a weaker effect of the TBO on the East Asia followed by a stronger one. A simple analytic model was designed to investigate the mechanism of the interdecadal variability of the TBO. The results indicated that a local TBO air-sea system not only supports the TBO variability in the WNP monsoon region but also produces an interdecadal variability of the TBO. 展开更多

The Turonian Notom Delta is one of the Ferron fluvial-deltaic wedges deposited in the foreland basins of the Cretaceous Seaway of North America. The wedge is exposed three dimensionally in the Henry Mountains region Utah,USA.High-resolution sequence stratigraphic analysis along a 35 km dip-oriented outcrop belt shows that the wedge consists of six depositional sequences.Ammonite and Inoceramid biostratigraphy and 40Ar/39Ar age dating of various bentonites show that the wedge was deposited from 91.25 Ma to 90.63 Ma,an interval of merely 0.62 Ma.Assuming each sequence is formed over a similar time span, each sequence, thus, represents about 105 yr,suggesting high-frequency depositional sequences.Amplitude of relative sea-level changes, built on shoreline trajectory,is 2-61 m,with an average of only 20 m.Fluvial incision during high-frequency and low-amplitude relative sealevel fall is mainly around the highstand prism.Incision diminishes rapidly up dip and down dip,and the resultant incised valleys are narrow and shallow.Such sea-level fluctuations also result in small, stratigraphically complex shoreline sandstones that need special attention during hydrocarbon exploration. 展开更多

The evolution of shale reservoirs is mainly related to two functions:mechanical compaction controlled by ground stress and chemical compaction controlled by thermal effect.Thermal simulation experiments were conducted to simulate the chemical compaction of marine-continental transitional shale, and X-ray diffraction(XRD),CO2 adsorption,N2 adsorption and high-pressure mercury injection(MIP)were then used to characterize shale diagenesis and porosity. Moreover, simulations of mechanical compaction adhering to mathematical models were performed, and a shale compaction model was proposed considering clay content and kaolinite proportions. The advantage of this model is that the change in shale compressibility, which is caused by the transformation of clay minerals during thermal evolution, may be considered. The combination of the thermal simulation and compaction model may depict the interactions between chemical and mechanical compaction.Such interactions may then express the pore evolution of shale in actual conditions of formation.Accordingly, the obtained results demonstrated that shales having low kaolinite possess higher porosity at the same burial depth and clay mineral content, proving that other clay minerals such as illite-smectite mixed layers(I/S)and illite are conducive to the development of pores.Shales possessing a high clay mineral content have a higher porosity in shallow layers(<3500 m)and a lower porosity in deep layers(>3500 m).Both the amount and location of the increase in porosity differ at different geothermal gradients.High geothermal gradients favor the preservation of high porosity in shale at an appropriate Ro.The pore evolution of the marine-continental transitional shale is divided into five stages.Stage 2 possesses an Ro of 1.0%-1.6%and has high porosity along with a high specific surface area.Stage 3 has an Ro of 1.6%-2.0%and contains a higher porosity with a low specific surface area. Finally,Stage 4 has an Ro of 2.0%-2.9%with a low porosity and high specific surface area. 展开更多

The concentration of 39 trace elements in coal from the late Permian taken from the eastern Yunnan-western Guizhou region was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. It was found that the mean content of Ti, V, Cr, Mo, Co, Ni, Y, and Zr is higher than the national average. The occurrence of Mn, Ni, and Co in the different coalfields is distinctly different. Most of the enriched transition metal elements exist mainly as inorganic minerals. In the Zhina coalfield, Co, Ni, and Nb are primarily associated with sulfur. Mn, Cs, and Mo are mostly sulfides. Almost all Co was organic and a significant part of the Ni is also organic in the Liupanshui coalfield. Cs, Co, and Ni are related to sulfur in the coal taken from eastern Yunnan. Carbonate is the main form of Mn in the coal from eastern Yunnan and the Liupanshui coalfield. Ti is the oxide in the coal samples where Ti is enriched. Zr is in the form of zircon in the samples where Zr is enriched. The situation for most of the transition metal elements is consistent with terrestrial genesis. Coal seams are universally influenced by the sea. The strongly seawater effected peat bog with a reductive and alkaline environment favors the relative enrichment of Mn. A reducing environment is conducive to transition metal element enrichment. 展开更多

The significant difference between the mechanical properties of soft rock and hard rock results in the complexity of the failure mode of the anti-dip layered slope with soft and hard rock interbedding. In order to reveal the landslide mechanism, taking the north slope of Fushun West Open-pit Mine as an example, this paper analyzed the failure mechanism of different landslides with monitoring and field surveys, and simulated the evolution of landslides. The study indicated that when the green mudstone(hard rock)of the anti-dip slope contains siltized intercalations(soft rock),the existence of weak layers not only aggravates the toppling deformation of anti-dip layered slope with high dip,but also causes the shear failure of anti-dip layered slope with stable low dip.The shear failure including subsidence induced sliding and wedge failure mainly exists in the unloading zone of the slope. Its failure depth and failure time were far less than that of toppling failure. In terms of the development characteristics of deformation, toppling deformation has the long-term and progressive characteristics, but shear failure deformation has the abrupt and transient characteristics. This study has deepened the understanding of such slope landslide mechanism, and can provide reference for similar engineering. 展开更多

In this paper, the type, vertical evolution, and distribution pattern of sedimentary facies of the Paleogene Dainan Formation in the Gaoyou Depression of the North Jiangsu Basin are studied in detail. Results show that fan delta, delta, nearshore subaqueous fan,and lacustrine facies developed during the Dainan Formation period and their distribution pattern was mainly controlled by tectonics and paleogeography. The fan delta and nearshore subaqueous fan facies predominantly occur in the southern steep slope region where fault-induced subsidence is thought to have created substantial accommodation, whereas the delta facies are distributed on the northern gentle slope which is thought to have experienced less subsidence. Finally, the lacustrine facies is shown to have developed in the center of the depression,as well as on the flanks of the fan delta, delta, and nearshore subaqueous fan facies.Vertically, the Dainan Formation represents an integrated transgressiveregressive cycle, with the E2d1being the transgressive sequence and the E2d2being the regressive sequence. This distribution model of sedimentary facies plays an important role in predicting favorable reservoir belts for the Dainan Formation in the Gaoyou Depression and similar areas. In the Gaoyou Depression, sandstones of the subaqueous distributary channels in the fan delta and the subaqueous branch channels in the delta are characterized by physical properties favorable for reservoir formation. 展开更多
