Design optimization of a sensitivity-enhanced tilt sensor based on femtosecond fiber bragg grating

Aiming at the requirement for high-precision tilt monitoring in the field of structural health monitoring(SHM),this paper proposes a sensitivity-enhanced tilt sensor based on a femtosecond fiber Bragg grating(FBG).Firstly,structural design of the tilt sensor was conducted based on static mechanics principles.By positioning the FBG away from the beam’s neutral axis,linear strain enhancement in the FBG was achieved,thereby improving sensor sensitivity.The relationship between FBG strain,applied force,and the offset distance from the neutral axis was established,determining the optimal distance corresponding to maximum strain.Based on this optimization scheme,a prototype of the tilt sensor was designed,fabricated,and experimentally tested.Experimental results show that the FBG offset distance yielding maximum sensitivity is 4.4 mm.Within a tilt angle range of−30°to 30°,the sensor achieved a sensitivity of 129.95 pm/°and a linearity of 0.9997.Compared to conventional FBG-based tilt sensors,both sensitivity and linearity were significantly improved.Furthermore,the sensor demonstrated excellent repeatability(error<0.94%),creep resistance(error<0.30%),and temperature stability(error<0.90%).These results demonstrate the sensor’s excellent potential for SHM applications.The sensor has been successfully deployed in an underground pipeline project,conducting long-term monitoring of tilt and deformation in the steel support structures,further proving its value for engineering safety monitoring. 展开更多

A fiber Bragg grating temperature sensor network was designed to implement the real-time health monitoring of the aluminum reduction cell. The heat transfer process was simulated using software ANSYS, and an on-line shell monitoring system was established based on optical sensing technology. According to aluminum reduction cell heat transfer theory, the 2D slice finite element model was developed. The relationship between shell temperature and cell status was discussed. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was chosen as the temperature sensor in light of its unique advantages. The accuracy of designed FBG temperature sensors exceeds 2 ~C, and good repeatability was exhibited. An interrogation system with 104 sensors based on VPG (volume phase grating) filter was established. Through the long-term monitoring on running state, the status of the aluminum reduction cell, including security and fatigue life could be acquired and estimated exactly. The obtained results provide the foundation for the production status monitoring and fault diagnosis. Long-term test results show good stability and repeatability which are compatible with electrolysis process. 展开更多

A micro-displacement sensor based on fiber Bragg grating(FBG) is proposed. The device consists of a pair of FBGs with different central wavelengths fabricated by femtosecond laser phase mask method and a metal substrate with lever structure. The displacement is amplified by lever structure and it converts into axial tension of FBG, which has a high displacement sensitivity. The amplification factors obtained by theoretical analysis and finite element simulation are 2.67 and 2.50, respectively. The experimental results show that in the range of 0-50 μm the shift of FBG center wavelength is linearly related to the displacement of measured object and displacement sensitivity reaches 121 pm/μm. In addition, the cascaded FBG is used to compensate the temperature. 展开更多

In this paper, the effects of packaging material and structure of fiber Bragg grating sensor performance are investigated. The effects of thermal expansion coefficient of different embedding materials on the temperature sensitivities of the FBG sensors are studied both theoretically and experimentally with good agreement, which provides a means for selection of FBG packaging material to achieve desired temperature sensitivity. We also demonstrate a 4-point bending structured FBG lateral force sensor that measures up to 242N force with well-preserved reflection spectrum, whereas for 3-point bending structure, multiple-peaks start to occur when applied force reaches 72N. 展开更多

海水入侵是沿海地区不可忽视的重大灾害,将导致水质恶化、土壤盐渍化等问题,因此,地下水盐度的原位及实时监测具有重要意义。本文提出了一种基于FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating)滤波特性的盐度传感器。采用化学腐蚀法腐蚀光纤包层,使FBG对外... 海水入侵是沿海地区不可忽视的重大灾害,将导致水质恶化、土壤盐渍化等问题,因此,地下水盐度的原位及实时监测具有重要意义。本文提出了一种基于FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating)滤波特性的盐度传感器。采用化学腐蚀法腐蚀光纤包层,使FBG对外界折射率敏感,从而实现盐度传感。通过MATLAB软件模拟了不同腐蚀程度的FBG的中心波长与盐度的关系,验证了该方法在理论上的可行性。同时对EFBG(Etched Fiber Bragg Grating)分别进行温度和盐度灵敏度的测试,并引入一根未腐蚀的FBG进行温度补偿,实现盐度和温度的同时测量。试验结果表明:不同腐蚀程度的EFBG的波长漂移量与盐度均成线性关系,在一定范围内腐蚀程度越高,盐度灵敏度系数越大,最大可达29.432 pm/%,证明了EFBG对海水盐度测量具有一定可行性。最后提出了一种适用于地下水盐度原位监测的封装方法,为沿海地区海水入侵的研究提供了一种新的测量手段。 展开更多

光纤布拉格光栅(fiber Bragg grating,FBG)传感技术具有高灵敏度、抗电磁干扰和实时监测等优点,在土木工程领域越来越受到关注,但传统的外部封装方式难以实现传感器与被测物体的完全协调变形,易导致测量误差.基于3D打印技术研发了一种... 光纤布拉格光栅(fiber Bragg grating,FBG)传感技术具有高灵敏度、抗电磁干扰和实时监测等优点,在土木工程领域越来越受到关注,但传统的外部封装方式难以实现传感器与被测物体的完全协调变形,易导致测量误差.基于3D打印技术研发了一种自感知土工格栅,实现了光纤光栅传感器与被测土工格栅的完全协调变形,利用FBG传感技术直接实现对格栅应变的实时、准确测量.并且,将该自感知土工格栅应用于下伏土洞路基的模型试验中,研究在不同加筋层数和加筋间距下路基的极限承载力、顶端沉降及筋材的变形特性.试验结果表明,通过加筋可以大幅提高下伏土洞路基的极限承载力,并可有效减少路基破坏时的沉降;加筋层数的增加和加筋间距的减小均可以提高下伏土洞路基承载力;在垂直方向上,格栅的应变随着格栅的埋深增大而减小;在水平方向上,格栅的应变随着与加载中心之间的距离增大而向两侧递减;顶层格栅的应变随着加筋层数的增加而减小,随着加筋间距的减小而增大.试验结果验证了自感知土工格栅在下伏土洞加筋路基监测中应用的可行性. 展开更多

In order to reveal the changing law of the mechanical response of asphalt pavements under the action of vehicle load and provide references for the design of durable pavements,three typical asphalt pavement structures with flexible base(S1),combined base(S2),and semi-rigid base(S3)were selected to perform field strain tests under static and dynamic load using the fiber Bragg grating optical sensing technology.The changing characteristics of the strain field along the horizontal and depth directions of pavements were analyzed.The results indicate that the most unfavorable asphalt pavement layers were the upper-middle surface layer and the lower base layer.In addition,the most unfavorable loading positions on the surface layer and the base layer were the center of wheel load and the gap center between two wheels,respectively.The most unfavorable layer of the surface layers gradually moved from the lower layer to the upper layer with the increase of base layer modulus.The power function relationships between structural layer strain and vehicle speed were revealed.The semi-rigid base asphalt pavement was the most durable pavement type,since its strain value was lower compared to those of the other structures. 展开更多

Critical crack tip opening displacement (CTODc) of concrete using experimental and analytical evaluation with seven different compressive strengths ranging from 30 up to 150 MPa was studied based on two types of fracture tests:three-point bending (TPB) and wedge splitting (WS).In the tests,the values of CTODc were experimentally recorded using a novel technique,in which fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were used,and two traditional techniques,in which strain gauges and clip gauges were deployed.The values of CTODc of tested concrete were also predicted using two existing analytical formulae proposed by JENQ & SHAH and XU,respectively.It is found that the values of CTODc obtained by both experimental measurements and analytical formulae exhibit a negligible variation as the compressive strength of concrete increases,and the test geometry adopted has little impact on the value of CTODc.Regarding the experimental measurement of CTODc,the clip gauge method generally leads to a larger value of CTODc and shows a more significant scatter as compared with the other two methods,while the strain gauge method leads to a slightly lower CTODc as compared with the FBG sensor method.The analytical formula proposed by JENQ and SHAH is found to generally lead to an overestimation,while the analytical formula proposed by XU shows a good accuracy. 展开更多
