Deterioration mechanism and rapid detection of performances of an existing subgrade in southern China 被引量:9

To relieve the increasing traffic load, many early built highways need to be widened or reconstructed. The rapid performance detection to existing subgrades is important to their reasonable evaluation and maximized utilization. Based on five kinds of soils taken from an existing highway in southern China, three commonly detecting methods were used to determine their moisture contents, compaction degrees and resilient moduli. The results showed that the measured moisture contents were greater than the design value, and the compaction degrees decreased sharply compared to the original ones. The moisture and heat exchange produced a decrease in the resilient modulus of plate loading test(PLT) from the standard 60 MPa down to 40 MPa. Afterwards, the portable falling weight deflectometer(PFWD) and dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP) were used to evaluate the subgrade performances. The measured PFWD moduli and the DCP penetration rates were correlated with the resilient moduli of PLT, deflections of the Beckman beam test, compaction degrees and moisture contents. The correlation analysis indicates that both of two methods are suitable in rapid detecting subgrade performances, but PFWD method is more recommended for it has higher accuracy and efficiency. 展开更多

Salt weathering leads to destruction of many valuable cultural heritage monuments and porous building material. The present study aims at providing more laboratory evidence for evaluating the effects of salt precipitation on the deterioration process. In view of this, the remoulded soil specimens were mixed with three kinds of salts(i.e., NaCl, Na_2SO_4 and their mixture) with different salt concentrations, and the specimens were kept in environment cabinet for undergoing different wet-dry cycles. After each cycle, the ultrasound velocity measurements were employed to monitor the deterioration process. For the specimens that have suffered three wet-dry cycles, the mechanical properties(i.e. shear strength and compression strength) were determined to evaluate the degree of deterioration. Furthermore, considering the realistic conservation environment of earthen sites, mechanical stability of these specimens against sediment-carrying wind erosion was conducted in a wind tunnel. These experiments results indicate that the overall average velocities of the specimens after the third cycle are significantly lower than those subjected to only one cycle. Ultrasound velocity, mechanical strength and wind erosion rate decrease when salt content increases. However, the internal friction angle increases firstly, and then decreases with the increase in salt content added to the specimens. Na_2SO_4 contributes most of the surface deterioration, while NaCl plays little role in the deterioration. The damage potential of the salt mixture is less obvious and largely dependent on the crystallisation location. 展开更多

When roadways are constructed above or adjacent to heavily mined regions, the ground subsidence caused by pillar collapse inflicts severe damage on these roadways. In this study, some surface subsidence events were first reviewed to present roof caving characteristics caused by pillar failure. The bearing characteristic and failure pattern of a single pillar with or without effect of discontinuity were further numerically simulated using distinct element code(3 DEC). It was found that the spalling of pillar or slippage of discontinuity would damage the bearing capacity of pillar during the failure process. The stress at the pillar core could be greater than uniaxial compressive strength of the pillar. However, when a discontinuity runs through a pillar, the slippage of discontinuity would significantly degrade the bearing capacity of the pillar. In pillar support system, if any pillar unexpectedly degrades or loses its bearing capacity, the load transferred from the degraded pillar acts on neighboring pillars, and the shear force also increases at relevant positions. However, the roof cutting and surface subsidence characteristics would perform in different patterns. In some cases, surface subsides slowly;in the worst scenario, shock bump may be induced by pillar and roof collapse. 展开更多

A mathematical model to determine the optimal production lot size for a deteriorating production system under an extended product inspection policy is developed. The last-K product inspection policy is considered so that the nonconforming items can be reduced, under which the last K products in a production lot are inspected and the nonconforming items from those inspected are reworked. Consider that the products produced towards the end of a production lot are more likely to be nonconforming, is proposed an extended product inspection policy for a deteriorating production system. That is, in a production lot, product inspections are performed among the middle K1 items and after inspections, all of the last K2 products are directly reworked without inspections. Our objective here is the joint optimization of the production lot size and the corresponding extended inspection policy such that the expected total cost per unit time is minimized. Since there is no closed form expression for our optimal policy, the existence for the optimal production inspection policy and an upper bound for the optimal lot size are obtained. Furthermore, an efficient solution procedure is provided to search for the optimal policy. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed model and indicate that the expected total cost per unit time of our product inspection model is less than that of the last-K inspection policy. 展开更多

The railway tunnel concrete lining exposed to sulfate-bearing groundwater beyond 40 years in southwest of China was investigated. Field investigation, sulfate ions content and corroded products analysis, macro/microscopic test were carried out. Results show that under the tunnel concrete lining structure and its served environmental conditions, sulfate solutions permeate concrete lining and accumulate on windward-side of concrete lining, resulting in the increase of sulfate ions content on windward-side and the diffusion of sulfate ions from windward-side to waterward-side, which cause the concrete lining of windward-side damaged seriously but the waterward-side of concrete lining is still in perfect condition. It is confirmed that structural characteristic of tunnel and environmental conditions lead to physical attack with the leaching of concrete and sodium sulfate crystallization as well as chemical corrosion with formation of gypsum in high sulfate concentration and formation of thaumasite in proper temperature rather than formation of ettringite. These achievements can provide academic and technical supports for understanding the deterioration mechanism of concrete lining as well as constructing railway tunnel under sulfate attack. 展开更多

An epidemiologic health survey was carried out among 314 workers in one of grain elevators in Shenyang.A medical and occupational questionnaire was administered by trained interviewers. Spirometry was performed on site. 61.47% of the grain workers complained of one or more respiratory symptoms during or after exposure to airborne grain dust.The prevalence of various symptoms was significantly higher among grain workers than control subjects. 15.6% of the grain workers had episodes of grain fever. The mean values of V<sub>max75</sub>, V<sub>max50</sub>, and V<sub>max25</sub> was significantly lower for grain workers than control subjects, suggesting that the group of grain workers had evidence of small airway dysfunction. Pulmonary function abnormalities were associated with increased duration of employment in the grain elevator,smoking was also associated with deterioration of respiratory function. 展开更多

This methodology uses a gamma distribution to model the material degradation, and the impact of imperfect maintenance actions on the system reliability is investigated. The state of a degrading system immediately after the imperfect maintenance action is assumed as a random variable and the maintenance time follows a geometric process. Furthermore, the explicit expressions for the long-run average cost and availability per unit time of the system are evaluated, an optimal policy (ε^*) could be determined numeri- cally or analytically according to the optimization model. At last, a numerical example for a degrading system modeled by a gamma process is presented to demonstrate the use of this policy in practical applications. 展开更多

This methodology uses a gamma distribution to model the material degradation, and the impact of imperfect maintenance actions on the system reliability is investigated. The state of a degrading system immediately after the imperfect maintenance action is assumed as a random variable and the maintenance time follows a geometric process. A maintenance policy (N) is applied by which the system will be repaired whenever it experiences Nth preventive maintenance (PM), and an optimal policy (N*) could be determined numerically or analytically for minimizing the long-run average cost per unit time.
