Recent advances in additive manufacturing have enabled the construction of metallic lattice structures with tailored mechanical and functional properties. One potential application of metallic lattice struc-tures is in the impact load mitigation where an external kinetic energy is absorbed by the deformation/crushing of lattice cells. This has motivated a growing number of experimental and numerical studies, recently,on the crushing behavior of additively produced lattice structures. The present study overviews the dynamic and quasi-static crushing behavior of additively produced Ti64,316L,and AlSiMg alloy lattice structures. The first part of the study summarizes the main features of two most commonly used additive processing techniques for lattice structures, namely selective-laser-melt(SLM)and electro-beam-melt(EBM),along with a description of commonly observed process induced defects. In the second part, the deformation and strain rate sensitivities of the selected alloy lattices are outlined together with the most widely used dynamic test methods, followed by a part on the observed micro-structures of the SLM and EBM-processed Ti64,316L and AlSiMg alloys. Finally, the experimental and numerical studies on the quasi-static and dynamic compression behavior of the additively processed Ti64,316L,and AlSiMg alloy lattices are reviewed. The results of the experimental and numerical studies of the dynamic properties of various types of lattices, including graded,non-uniform strut size,hollow,non-uniform cell size, and bio-inspired,were tabulated together with the used dynamic testing methods. The dynamic tests have been noted to be mostly conducted in compression Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB)or Taylor-and direct-impact tests using the SHPB set-up,in all of which relatively small-size test specimens were tested. The test specimen size effect on the compression behavior of the lattices was further emphasized. It has also been shown that the lattices of Ti64 and AlSiMg alloys are relatively brittle as compared with the lattices of 316L alloy. Finally, the challenges associated with modelling lattice structures were explained and the micro tension tests and multi-scale modeling techniques combining microstructural characteristics with macroscopic lattice dynamics were recommended to improve the accuracy of the numerical simulations of the dynamic compression deformations of metallic lattice structures. 展开更多

Cemented tailings backfill(CTB)is a crucial support material for ensuring the long-term stability of underground goafs.A comprehensive understanding of its compressive mechanical behavior is essential for improving engineering safety.Although extensive studies have been conducted on the uniaxial compressive properties of CTB,damage constitutive models that effectively capture its damage evolution process remain underdeveloped, and its failure mechanisms are not yet fully clarified. To address these gaps, this study conducted systematic uniaxial compression tests on CTB specimens prepared with varying cement-tailings ratios. The results revealed distinct compaction and softening phases in the stress−strain curves.A lower cement-tailings ratio significantly reduced the strength and deformation resistance of CTB,along with a decrease in elastic energy accumulation at peak stress and dissipation energy in the post peak stage.Based on these findings,a modified damage constitutive model was developed by introducing a correction factor, enabling accurate simulation of the entire uniaxial compression process of CTB with different cement-tailings ratios.Comparative analysis with classical constitutive models validated the proposed model’s accuracy and applicability in describing the compressive behavior of CTB.Furthermore, particle size distribution and acoustic emission tests were employed to investigate the influence of cement-tailings ratio on failure mechanisms. The results indicated that a lower cement-tailings ratio leads to coarser particle sizes, which intensify shear-related acoustic emission signals and ultimately result in more pronounced macroscopic shear failure. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the optimal design of CTB mix ratios. 展开更多

Analyzing the fatigue damage characteristics of hot dry rock(HDR)affected by seawater thermal shock cycles is required for the efficient exploitation of HDR and the conservation of freshwater resources.Mechanical and acoustic emission(AE)monitoring tests were conducted during the triaxial compression of HDR at different confining pressures, temperatures, and numbers of seawater thermal shocks to investigate the seawater damage of HDR.The test results indicated an increase in the cumulative AE counts with increasing temperature and number of seawater thermal shocks, and a decrease in AE counts with increasing confining pressure. The effect of the number of seawater thermal shocks was significant. The AE counts were 276% higher at 15 than at 0 seawater thermal shocks. The b-value increased with the number of thermal shocks and stabilized after 5 shocks. Most of the damage was small fractures, which reduced the rock’s damage resistance. The AE time series under HDR triaxial compression exhibited multifractal features.High energy AE events dominated the damage mechanism of HDR,indicating shear damage to the HDR.Therefore, this study can provide a reference for seawater as a heat transfer fluid in the design of geothermal energy resource extraction. 展开更多

The asymmetric creep aging behaviors of a pre-treated Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy under high and low stresses have been investigated for high precision creep age forming application of aluminum integral panels. With the increase of applied stress, the creep strains under the tensile stresses are higher than those of compressive stresses and the asymmetry of creep strain is more obvious. However, the mechanical properties of tensile stress creep aged samples are lower than those of compressive stress creep aged samples.Dislocation density, dislocation moving velocity and the proportion of precipitates directly lead to the asymmetry of creep strain and mechanical properties after tensile-compressive creep aging process. In addition, the tensile and compressive stresses have little effect on the width of the precipitate-free zone(PFZ).It indicates that in the high stress creep age forming process of the pretreated Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy, the tensile stress promotes the dislocation motion to obtain a better creep strain but weakens its mechanical properties compared with the compressive stress. In the field of civil aviation aircraft component manufacturing, the introduction of tension and compression stress asymmetry into the creep constitutive model may improve the accuracy of creep age forming components. 展开更多

The electric vertical takeoff and landing(e VTOL)aircraft shows great potential for rapid military personnel deployment on the battlefield. However, its susceptibility to control loss, complex crashes, and extremely limited bottom energy-absorbing space demands higher comprehensive crashworthiness of its subfloor thin-walled structures. This study investigated the energy absorption capacity of novel concave polygonal carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP)tubes under multi-angle collisions.Quasistatic compression experiments and finite element simulations were conducted to assess the failure mode and energy absorption. The influences of cross-section shapes, loading conditions, and geometry parameters on crashworthiness metrics were further analyzed. The results revealed that, under the similar weight, concave polygonal tubes exhibited superior energy absorption under axial loads compared to regular polygonal and circular tubes, attributed to the increased number of axial splits. However, both regular and concave polygonal tubes, particularly the latter, demonstrated reduced oblique energy absorption compared to traditional square tubes with the increasing ratio of SEA value decreased from 20%-16%.Notably,this reduction in energy absorption can be compensated for by the implementation of inward and outward crusher plugs, and with them, the concave polygonal tubes demonstrated outstanding overall crashworthiness performance under multiple loading conditions. This concave cross-sectional design methods could serve as a guidance for the development of the eVTOL subfloor. 展开更多

Experimental test schemes, failure modes of specimens, jack load-vertical displacement curves, jack load-deformation of chord and strain intensity distribution curves of joints were presented. The effects of β and connection types on axial compression property of joints were studied. The results show that the ultimate axial compression capacity of common bird beak SHS T-joints and diamond bird beak SHS T-joints is larger than that of traditional SHS T-joint specimens with big values of β. The ultimate axial compression capacity of diamond bird beak SHS T-joints is larger than that of common bird beak SHS T-joints. As β increases, the increase of the ultimate axial compression capacity of diamond bird beak SHS T-joints over that of common bird beak joints grows. The ultimate axial compression capacity and the initial axial stiffness of all kinds of joints increase as β increases, and the initial axial stiffness of the diamond bird beak SHS T-joints is the largest. The object of this article is to investigate the energy evolution mechanism and failure criteria of cross-jointed samples containing an opening during deformation and failure based on the uniaxial compression test and rock energy principle. The results show that the energy evolution characteristics of the samples correspond to a typical progressive damage mode. The peak total energy, peak elastic energy, and total input energy of the samples all first decrease and then increase with an increase of half of the included angle, reaching their minimum values when this angle is 45°,while the dissipated energy generally increases with this angle. The existence of the opening and cross joints can obviously weaken the energy storage capacity of the rock, and the change in the included angle of the cross joint has a great influence on the elastic energy ratio of the sample before the peak stress, which leads to some differences in the distribution laws of the input energy. The continuous change and the subsequent sharp change in the rate of change in the energy consumption ratio can be used as the criteria of the crack initiation and propagation and the unstable failure of the sample, respectively. 展开更多

Geometrical nonlinearity of the soft soil and the deviation of water flow in the soft clay from Darcy's law have been well recognized in practice. However, the theory of consolidation, which can account for both the geometrical nonlinearity and the non-Darcian flow, has not been reported so far. In this contribution, a model for the consolidation of soft clay which can allow for these two factors simultaneously is proposed. Utilizing the finite difference method, the numerical model for this problem is developed. With the numerical model, the effects of the geometrical nonlinearity and the non-Darcian flow on the consolidation of the soft soil are investigated. The results show that when the self-weight stress is calculated by the same method, the rate of the non-Darcian consolidation for the large-strain case is larger than that for the small-strain case, but the difference between them is limited. However, the difference between the consolidation rates caused by the non-Darcian and Darcian flows is significant. Therefore, when the geometrical nonlinearity of the soft clay is considered in calculating the consolidation settlement, due to the complexity of the large-strain assumption, the small-strain assumption can be used to replace it if the self-weight stress for the small-strain assumption is calculated by considering its sedimentation. However, due to the aforementioned large difference between the consolidation rates with consideration of the non-Darcian flow in soft clay or not, it is better to consider the non-Darcian flow law for both the small and large stain assumptions. 展开更多

To study the energy storage and dissipation characteristics of deep rock under two-dimensional compression with constant confining pressure, the single cyclic loading-unloading two-dimensional compression tests were performed on granite specimens with two height-to-width(H/W)ratios under five confining pressures.Three energy density parameters(input energy density, elastic energy density and dissipated energy density)in the axial and lateral directions of granite specimens under different confining pressures were calculated using the area integral method. The experimental results show that, for the specimens with a specific H/W ratio, these three energy density parameters in the axial and lateral directions increase nonlinearly with the confining pressure as quadratic polynomial functions.Under constant confining pressure compression, the linear energy storage law of granite specimens in the axial and lateral directions was founded.Using the linear energy storage law in different directions, the elastic energy density in various directions(axial elastic energy density, lateral elastic energy density and total elastic energy density)of granite under any specific confining pressures can be calculated. When the H/W ratio varies from 1:1 to 2:1,the lateral compression energy storage coefficient increases and the corresponding axial compression energy storage coefficient decreases, while the total compression energy storage coefficient is almost independent of the H/W ratio. 展开更多

Lots of field investigations have proven that layer-crack structure usually appears during the excavation process of deep rock or coal mass.To provide experimental data for studying the formation mechanism of layer-crack structure, this study researches the influence of lateral pressure on the mechanical behavior of different rock types.Four rock types have been tested and the formation mechanism of macro-fracture surface is analyzed. Results indicate that the brittleness and burst proneness of rock or coal material are stronger than that of gypsum material due to the different mineral compositions and structures. When the lateral pressure is less than 10%uniaxial strength, the peak stress and elastic modulus increase with the increase of lateral pressure;but when the lateral pressure is larger than 10%uniaxial strength, the two parameters decrease slightly or keep steady. This is because when the lateral pressure reaches a certain value, local failure will be formed during the process of applying lateral pressure.Under the condition of low lateral pressure, the failure of the specimen is dominated by the tensile mechanism;under the condition of relatively high lateral pressure, the area of the specimen close to the free surface is tensile splitting failure, and the area far from the free surface is shear failure. 展开更多

The mechanical behavior of plastic concrete used in the cut-off walls of earth dams has been studied. Triaxial compression tests on the specimens in various ages and mix designs under different confining pressures have been done and the stress-strain behavior of such materials and their strength parameter changes have been experimentally investigated. It has been observed that increasing the confining pressures applied on the specimens causes the material behavior to be alike the more ductile materials and the compressive strength increases considerably as well. Moreover, a parametric study has been carded out to investigate the influence of essential parameters on the shear strength parameters of these materials. According to the research, increasing the coarse to fine aggregates ratio leads to the increase of compressive strength of the specimens as well as the increase of the cohesion and internal friction angle of the materials. Furthermore, the bentonite content decrease and the cement factor increase result in an increase of the cohesion parameter of plastic concretes and decrease of the internal friction angle of such materials. 展开更多

Residual coal pillars play an important role in mining the adjacent coal seam safely, managing the gobs and maintaining the stability of abandoned coal mines. The height to diameter ratio(H/D)affects the stability of residual coal pillars. In this study, uniaxial compressive tests of coal specimens with five H/D(2.0,1.5,1.0,0.8 and 0.6)were performed, and the stress, strain and acoustic emission(AE)were monitored. Results show that the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)and peak strain increase with H/D decreasing. An empirical equation is proposed to calculate the UCS based on the H/D.The AE activities during coal failure process can be separated into four periods. The span of quiet period and rapid decline period shorten with H/D decreasing. The smaller the H/D is,the more complicated the failure characteristics of coal will be.The failure form of coal with H/D of 2.0,1.5,and 1.0 is primarily shear failure, while splitting failure along the axial direction is the mainly mode when H/D is 0.8 or 0.6.The initiation, expansion, aggregation and connection of micro-cracks can be reflected by the real-time spatial evolution of AE event points. 展开更多

Anisotropic strength and deformability of the rock mass with non-persistent joints are governed by cracking process of the rock bridges. The dependence of cracking process of jointed rock masses on the two important geometrical parameters, joint orientation and joint persistence, was studied systematically by carrying out a series of uniaxial compression tests on gypsum specimens with regularly arranged multiple parallel pre-existing joints. According to crack position, mechanism and temporal sequence, seven types of crack initiations and sixteen types of crack coalescences, were identified. It was observed that both tensile cracks and shear cracks can emanate from the pre-existing joints as well as the matrix. Vertical joints were included and coplanar tensile cracks initiation and coalescence were observed accordingly. For specimen with joint inclination angle ,8=75~, it was found that collinear joints can be linked not only by coplanar shear cracks but also by mixed tensile-shear cracks, and that a pair of them can form a small rotation block. Seven failure modes, including axial cleavage, crushing, crushing and rotation of new blocks, stepped failure, stepped failure and rotation of new blocks, shear failure along a single plane and shear failure along multiple planes, were observed. These modes shift gradually in accordance with the combined variation of joint orientation and joint persistence. It is concluded that cracking process and failure modes are more strongly affected by joint orientation than by joint persistence, especially when joint inclination angle is larger than 45~. Finally, variations of macroscopic mechanical behaviors with the two geometrical parameters, such as patterns of the complete axial stress-axial strain curves, peak strength and elastic modulus, are summarized and their mechanisms are successfully explained according to their different cracking process. 展开更多

Hollow cylindrical sandstone specimens filled with Al,Pb and polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA),as well as hollow and solid specimens were tested under monotonic unconfined compression. The discrepancies in the elastic modulus, unconfined compressive strength and failure pattern of the specimens were studied and then illustrated. The interaction stress threshold and localized failure stress threshold were identified by the strain gauges on the rock and filling rod.The results indicated that unobvious changes in the strength and elastic modulus were found between the solid and hollow specimens, while for the hollow specimens with infillings, the strength decreases with increasing the stiffness of the infilling material. The filling material with a higher stiffness leads to a high hoop stress, and hence a stronger interfacial force. The specimens coupled with filling rod are mainly fractured with tensile cracks, while the solid and hollow specimens are typically split into blocky fragments with dominated shear fractures. Finally, the equivalent inner pressure in the opening was theoretically derived. The findings suggested in the experiments can be well explained using the theoretical thick-walled cylinder model. 展开更多

Considering strain localization in the form of a narrow band initiated just at peak stress, three analytical expressions for stressstrain curves of quasibrittle geomaterial (such as rock and concrete) in uniaxial tension, direct shear and uniaxial compression were presented, respectively. The three derived stressstrain curves were generalized as a unified formula. Beyond the onset of strain localization, a linear strain-softening constitutive relation for localized band was assigned. The size of the band was controlled by internal or characteristic length according to gradient-dependent plasticity. Elastic strain within the entire specimen was assumed to be uniform and decreased with the increase of plastic strain in localized band. Total strain of the specimen was decomposed into elastic and plastic parts. Plastic strain of the specimen was the average value of plastic strains in localized band over the entire specimen. For different heights, the predicted softening branches of the relative stressstrain curves in uniaxial compression are consistent with the previously experimental results for normal concrete specimens. The present expressions for the post-peak stressdeformation curves in uniaxial tension and direct shear agree with the previously numerical results based on gradient-dependent plasticity. 展开更多

The results show that variation of stress increases nonlinearly and residual oil rate decreases with the increase of compression ratio. Lower residual oil of cake was obtained by pressing gently and frequently. Curve fitting on both relationships had been built and parameters for the model were obtained by least square procedure and deepening research on pressing process of the castor beans for castor oil. Multifrequency polarimetric SAR imagery provides a very convenient approach for signal processing and acquisition of radar image. However, the amount of information is scattered in several images, and redundancies exist between different bands and polarizations. Similar to signal-polarimetric SAR image, multifrequency polarimetric SAR image is corrupted with speckle noise at the same time. A method of information compression and speckle reduction for multifrequency polarimetric SAR imagery is presented based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA). KPCA is a nonlinear generalization of the linear principal component analysis using the kernel trick. The NASA/JPL polarimetric SAR imagery of P, L, and C bands quadpolarizations is used for illustration. The experimental results show that KPCA has better capability in information compression and speckle reduction as compared with linear PCA. 展开更多

In this study, the micro-failure process and failure mechanism of a typical brittle rock under uniaxial compression are investigated via continuous real-time measurement of wave velocities. The experimental results indicate that the evolutions of wave velocities became progressively anisotropic under uniaxial loading due to the direction-dependent development of micro-damage.A wave velocity model considering the inner anisotropic crack evolution is proposed to accurately describe the variations of wave velocities during uniaxial compression testing.Based on which, the effective elastic parameters are inferred by a transverse isotropic constitutive model, and the evolutions of the crack density are inversed using a self-consistent damage model. It is found that the propagation of axial cracks dominates the failure process of brittle rock under uniaxial loading and oblique shear cracks develop with the appearance of macrocrack. 展开更多

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) method was used to investigate the full-field displacements and strains of the limestone specimen under external loads from the video images captured during the laboratory tests. The original colorful video images and experimental data were obtained from the uniaxial compression test of a limestone. To eliminate perspective errors and lens distortion, the camera was placed normal to the rock specimen exposure. After converted into a readable format of frame images, these videos were transformed into the responding grayscale images, and the frame images were then extracted. The full-field displacement field was obtained by using the PIV technique, and interpolated in the sub-pixel locations. The displacement was measured in the plane of the image and inferred from two consecutive images. The local displacement vectors were calculated for small sub-windows of the images by means of cross-correlation.The video images were interrogated in a multi-pass way, starting off with 64×64 images, ending with 16×16 images after 6 iterations, and using 75% overlap of the sub-windows.In order to remove spurious vectors, the displacements were filtered using four filters:signal-to-noise ratio filter, peak height filter, global filter and local filter. The cubic interpolation was utilized if the displacements without a number were encountered. The full-field strain was then obtained using the local least square method from the discrete displacements. The strain change with time at different locations was also investigated. It is found that the normal strains are dependant on the locations and the crack distributions.Between 1.0 and 5.0 s prior to the specimen failure, normal strains increase rapidly at many locations, while a stable status appears at some locations. When the specimen is in a failure status,a large rotation occurs and it increases in the inverse direction. The strain concentration bands do not completely develop into the large cracks, and meso-cracks are not visible in some bands. The techniques presented here may improve the traditional measurement of the strain field, and may provide a lot of valuable information in investigating the deformation/failure mechanism of rock materials. 展开更多

Geotechnical engineering that relates to the energy and environmental problem is receiving more and more attention worldwide. It is of great theoretical and practical value to study the properties of soil under thermal mechanical coupling and its mathematical description.Firstly, based on the general function,a unified primary and secondary consolidation model of saturated soil considering heating temperature is deduced.Combining the existing research achievements,a practical model is obtained which comprehensively reflects the effective stress change, creep and heating effects. After that,a series of thermo-consolidation tests are carried out using a temperature controlled consolidation instrument to study the effects of effective stress, temperature and consolidation duration on saturated soils. The corresponding functional formulas and parameters are obtained thusly. On this basis, the calculation and analysis are carried out to check the reliability and applicability of the newly proposed model. The new model is simple and practical and the parameters are easy to be obtained. And it describes the main law of consolidation compression of saturated soils under the thermal mechanical coupling effect. Therefore,it is suggested for theoretical analysis of thermal geotechnical engineering problems. 展开更多
