Low specific-speed centrifugal pump with Q=12.5 m3/h, H=60 m, n=2950 r/min was selected to be designed with eight axial reflux balance holes with 4.5 mm in diameter. The simulated Q-H curve and net positive suction head(NPSH) were in good agreement with experimental results, which illustrated that centrifugal pump with axial reflux balance holes was superior in the cavitation characteristic; however, it showed to little superiority in head and efficiency. The pressure in rear pump chamber at 0.6 times rate flow is 29.36% of pressure difference between outlet and inlet, which reduces to 29.10% at rate flow and 28.33% at 1.4 times rate flow. As the whole, the pressure distribution on front and rear shrouds from simulation results is not a standard parabola, and axial force decreases as flow rate increases. Radical reflux balance holes chosen to be 5.2 mm and 5.9 mm in diameter were further designed with other hydraulic parts unchanged. With structural grids adopted for total flow field, contrast numerical simulation on internal flow characteristics was conducted based on momentum equations and standard turbulence model(κ-ε). It is found that axial force of pump with radical reflux balance holes of5.2 mm and 5.9 mm in diameter is significantly less than that with radical reflux balance holes of 4.5 mm in diameter. Better axial force balance is obtained as the ratio of area of reflux balance holes and area of sealing ring exceeds 6.展开更多

The measured and calculated responses of the embankment and foundation exposed to road widening include the settlement, horizontal displacement, pore water pressure, and shear stresses. It is found that the road widening changed the transverse slope of the original pavement surface resulting from the nonuniform settlements. The maximum horizontal movement is found to be located at the shoulder of the original embankment. Although the difference is small,it is clearly seen that the geosynthetic reinforcement reduces the nonuniform settlements and horizontal movements due to road widening. Thus the reinforcement reduces the potential of pavement cracking and increases the stability of the embankment on soft ground in road widening.展开更多

It is very important to reduce the aerodynamic noise generated by the centrifugal fan. The flow field and the sound field on the whole centrifugal fan configuration have been carried out using the computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results show that the sound pressure level near the outlet of the centrifugal fan is too high. Based on the relationship between flow characteristics and the aerodynamic noise, four parameters of the centrifugal fan, i.e., impeller blade's outlet angle 0, volute tongue's gap t, collector inclination angle fl, and rotating speed n, were selected as design variables and optimized using response surface methodology. While keeping the function of flow rate unchanged, the peak noise level is reduced by 8 dB or 10.8%. The noise level is satisfactorily reduced.展开更多

However, the effects of pre-existing fracture on ground deformation are not fully understood. In this work, six centrifuge tests are reported to investigate the influence of pre-existing fracture on ground deformation induced by normal faulting in sand, clay and nine-layered soil with interbedded sand and clay layers. Shear box tests were conducted to develop a filter paper technique, which was adopted in soil model preparation to simulate the effects of pre-existing fracture in centrifuge tests. Centrifuge test results show that ground deformation mechanism in clay, sand and nine-layered soil strata is classified as a stationary zone, a shearing zone and a rigid body zone. Inclination of the strain localization is governed by the dilatancy of soil material. Moreover, the pre-existing fracture provides a preferential path for ground deformation and results in a scarp at the ground surface in sand. On the contrary, fault ruptures are observed at the ground surface in clay and nine-layered soil strata.展开更多

The influence of groundwater conditions relative to trench stability was examined by constructing long trenches using different slurries. The soil deformation and surface settlement induced by the excavation of the trench are found to be closely related to slurry type and excavation depth of the long trench. Increasing the bentonite concentration of the slurry has beneficial effects on stability: 1) larger particles can improve local and global stability in cases where filter cakes do not form, and 2) larger viscosity can promote filter cake formation on the walls of long trenches excavated in soft clay and enhance their stability.展开更多

The characteristics of the inner flow were investigated using the SST k-ω turbulence model. The distributions of pressure fluctuations in the impeller and the volute were recorded, and the pressure fluctuation intensity was analyzed comprehensively, at the design condition, using statistical methods. The results show that the pressure fluctuation intensity increases along the impeller streamline from the leading edge to the trailing edge. In the impeller passage, the intensity near the shroud is much higher than that near the hub at thc inlet. However, the intensity at the middle passage is almost equal to the intensity at the outlet. The pressure fluctuation intensity is the highest at the trailing edge on the pressure side and near the tongue because of the rotor-stator interaction. The distribution of pressure fluctuation intensity is symmetrical in the axial cross sections of the volute channel. However, this intensity decreases with increasing radial distance. Hence, the pressure fluctuation intensity can be reduced by modifying the geometry of the leading edge in the impeller and the tongue in the volute.展开更多

The results of the model test and numerical analysis are in satisfactory agreement, which shows that the direction of the shear stress between the culvert and the adjacent embankment depends on the differential settlement between them. A vertical earth pressure concentration appears on the culvert with a rigid piles foundation because of a downward shear stress. The ratio of the load on a soft foundation culvert and the overburden pressure above the culvert raises first and then decreases as the backfill height increases. In order to reduce the load on a culvert, it is suggested to limit the stiffness difference of the foundations under the culvert and embankment and to use a light backfill over the culvert.展开更多

The post-processing technique named differential amplification method was proposed for the comparison study of different flow structures. The full steady flow fields of an industrial centrifugal pump working on-design and off-design points were numerically investigated by solving Reynolds average Navier-Stokes equations together with a shear-stress transport(SST) k-? turbulence model. And the numerically predicted performance curves of the studied pump agree well with test measurement results. Compared with the flow flied on design point under the help of differential amplification method, the disturbance caused by interaction between blade and volute tongue is very obvious and it extends to the diffuser pipe on the working point with 0.8 times rated flux. While on the point with 1.2 times rated flux, the flow distribution in impeller region is roughly even and it flows more to the bottom section of the diffuser pipe. The above method was proved to be good at displaying the subtle secondary flow structure changes with a higher resolution effect relative to single isolated case observation, which helps the optimization decision-making from multiple design cases.展开更多

However, the centrifugal test method may not be efficient according to the results of hydraulic conductivity tests and piping erosion tests. The reason why seepage deformation in model tests may deviate from similarity was first discussed in this work. Then, the similarity criterion for seepage deformation in porous media was improved based on the extended Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer equation. Finally, the coupled particle flow code–computational fluid dynamics(PFC-CFD) model at the mesoscopic level was proposed to verify the derived similarity criterion. The proposed model maximizes its potential to simulate seepage erosion via the discrete element method and satisfy the similarity criterion by adjusting particle size. The numerical simulations achieved identical results with the prototype, thus indicating that the PFC-CFD model that satisfies the improved similarity criterion can accurately reproduce the processes of seepage erosion at the mesoscopic level.展开更多

The liquid phase was solved by the fluid governing equations in the Euler coordinatesystem; the solid particle phase was treated as a discrete medium and solved by the equations of particle motion inLagrange coordinate. The solid-liquid phase coupling was performed using iterative numerical method. An IS typecentrifugal pump was selected in the simulation. Water and sand particle were chosen as the continuous phase andthe discrete phase, respectively. The particle volumetric ratio at the pump inlet was in the range of 0.5%-3%with the particle size of 0.05-0.2 mm. The flow characteristics of the solid-liquid two-phase flows, the trajectoryof the particle cluster and the distribution of wear rate in the centrifugal pump were obtained by the simulation.展开更多

Different calculation models for centrifugal pumps were established under different pumping chamber sectional parameters. In the numerical simulation of the centrifugal pumps flow field, the shaft power, head, efficiency, and the changes of the internal flow field under different sectional areas and sectional shapes were studied with the RNG k-ε turbulence model, and the influence of the pumping chamber section characteristics of the non-overloaded centrifugal pumps were analyzed. The results show that sectional areas have a significant impact on the non-overload characteristics of centrifugal pumps. The shaft power and head of centrifugal pump are increasing with a lager sectional area, by which the gradient of head curves decreases. The efficiency is improved under a large flow rate condition, but the head and the efficiency are reduced at a small flow rate. It is also observed that the sectional shapes have less influence on the shaft power, the hydraulic performance and flow field characteristics of a centrifugal pump.展开更多

And quantitative grid convergence was assessed based on a grid convergence index(GCI), which accounts for the degree of grid refinement. The structured, unstructured or hybrid meshes are found to have certain difference for velocity distributions in impeller with the change of grid cell number. And the simulation results have errors to different degrees compared with experimental data. The GCI-value for structured meshes calculated is lower than that for the unstructured and hybrid meshes. Meanwhile, the structured meshes are observed to get more vortexes in impeller passage.Nevertheless, the hybrid meshes are found to have larger low-velocity area at outlet and more secondary vortexes at a specified location than structured meshes and unstructured meshes.展开更多

文摘The objective of this work is to compare the responses of geosynthetically-reinforced embankment and unreinforced embankment due to road widening by using the centrifuge model tests and a two-dimensional(2D) finite element(FE) model. The measured and calculated responses of the embankment and foundation exposed to road widening include the settlement, horizontal displacement, pore water pressure, and shear stresses. It is found that the road widening changed the transverse slope of the original pavement surface resulting from the nonuniform settlements. 文摘Investigations regarding the relation of noise performance for centrifugal pump operating in pump and turbine modes continue to be inadequate. This paper presents a series of comparisons of flow-induced noise for both operation modes. The interior flow-borne noise and structure modal were verified through experiments. The flow-borne noise was calculated by the acoustic boundary element method(ABEM),and the flow-induced structure noise was obtained by the coupled acoustic boundary element method(ABEM)/structure finite element method(SFEM).The results show that in pump mode, the pressure fluctuation in the volute is comparable to that in the outlet pipe, but in turbine mode, the pressure fluctuation in the impeller is comparable to that in the draft tube. The main frequency of interior flow-borne noise lies at blade passing frequency(BPF)and it shifts to the 9th BPF for interior flow-induced structure noise. The peak values at horizontal plane appear at the 5th BPF,and at axial plane, they get the highest sound pressure level(SPL)at the 8th BPF.Comparing with interior noise, the SPL of exterior flow-induced structure noise is incredibly small. At the 5th BPF,the pump body, cover and suspension show higher SPL in both modes. The outer walls of turbine generate relatively larger SPL than those of the pump.

文摘To obtain the vertical earth pressure on a soft foundation box culvert and investigate the interaction of the soil-culvert-foundation system, both a centrifugal model test and a numerical simulation were conducted and the comparisons with the current methods to determine the load on a culvert were completed. In order to reduce the load on a culvert, it is suggested to limit the stiffness difference of the foundations under the culvert and embankment and to use a light backfill over the culvert.

文摘The three-dimensional internal flow field of centrifugal pump is complex and variable with design parameters and operation conditions. The above method was proved to be good at displaying the subtle secondary flow structure changes with a higher resolution effect relative to single isolated case observation, which helps the optimization decision-making from multiple design cases.

文摘Conventional model tests and centrifuge tests are frequently used to investigate seepage erosion. The numerical simulations achieved identical results with the prototype, thus indicating that the PFC-CFD model that satisfies the improved similarity criterion can accurately reproduce the processes of seepage erosion at the mesoscopic level.
文摘In this paper, the discrete phase model (DPM) and semi-empirical wear model were used to simulatethe unsteady solid-liquid two-phase flows and wear in a centrifugal pump, to explore the solid particle movementand the wear of the pump. The flow characteristics of the solid-liquid two-phase flows, the trajectoryof the particle cluster and the distribution of wear rate in the centrifugal pump were obtained by the simulation.

文摘In order to specify the characteristics of un-overloaded centrifugal pumps, the IH100-65-200 pump was chosen as the model pump. It is also observed that the sectional shapes have less influence on the shaft power, the hydraulic performance and flow field characteristics of a centrifugal pump.

文摘Multistage centrifugal impellers with four different skew angles were investigated by using computational fluid dynamics. The purpose of this work is to investigate the influences of lean angle at the blade tip of the impeller inlet.Four variations of lean angles, that is,8°,10°,15° and 20°,were made at first stage impeller.Reynolds Average Navier Stokes equation was used in simulation together with a shear?stress transport(SST) k-w turbulence model and mixing-plane approach, respectively.Three dimensional fluid flows were simplified using periodic model to reduce the computational cost and time required.A good performance was expected that the secondary flow can be effectively reduced in the flow passage of the impeller without excessive increase in manufacturing cost caused by the secondary flow. The results show that secondary flow affects the main flow intricately to form vortices or having non-uniform velocity in the flow passage, which in turn results in substantial fluid energy loss not only in the impeller but also in the guide vane downstream of impeller. The numerical solutions were performed and allowed the optimum design and operating conditions to be obtained.

文摘Considering the serious coal and rock dynamic disasters around the main slip plane called F16 in the coal mining area) of Henan Yima(China) thrust nappe structure, the mechanical genesis of the Yima thrust nappe structure was studied comprehensively using geomechanics, fault mechanics, elastic mechanics, and Coulomb's law of friction.First, using the centrifugal inertia force of Earth's rotation as a source,a mechanical model of N-S compression superimposed with W-E reverse torsion was established to explain the formation of the early Yima coal basin and Jurassic Yima Group coal measures.Second,an equation for the ultimate stress in the forming stage of F16 was derived using the plastic slip-line field theory and the parabolic Mohr failure criterion. Moreover, the distribution of ultimate stress and the geometric characteristics of the fault profile were obtained using the field model parameters. Finally, the stress field of F16 and the mechanical genesis of the large-scale reverse thrust sheet were discussed based on elastic mechanics theory and Coulomb's law of friction. The results show that the tectonic framework of the early Yima coal basin and the formation pattern of Jurassic Yima Group coal measures given by the model are consistent with the in-situ explorations. The geometric characteristics of the fault profile obtained by numerical calculation can better reflect the shape of F16 in its forming stage, and the mechanical genesis of the large-scale reverse thrust sheet also concurred with the field situations. Thus, this work can provide a foundation for further studies on the genesis of the thrust nappe structure, the mechanism of rock bursts induced by F16,and the characteristics of the residual stress field in the Yima mining area.

文摘In order to evaluate the effects of mesh generation techniques and grid convergence on pump performance in centrifugal pump model, three widely used mesh styles including structured hexahedral, unstructured tetrahedral and hybrid prismatic/tetrahedral meshes were generated for a centrifugal pump model. Meanwhile, the structured meshes are observed to get more vortexes in impeller passage.Nevertheless, the hybrid meshes are found to have larger low-velocity area at outlet and more secondary vortexes at a specified location than structured meshes and unstructured meshes.
