Under complex flight conditions, such as obstacle avoidance and extreme sea state,wing-in-ground(WIG)effect aircraft need to ascend to higher altitudes, resulting in the disappearance of the ground effect.A design of high-speed WIG airfoil considering non-ground effect is carried out by a novel two-step inverse airfoil design method that combines conditional generative adversarial network(CGAN)and artificial neural network(ANN).The CGAN model is employed to generate a variety of airfoil designs that satisfy the desired lift-drag ratios in both ground effect and non-ground effect conditions.Subsequently, the ANN model is utilized to forecast aerodynamic parameters of the generated airfoils. The results indicate that the CGAN model contributes to a high accuracy rate for airfoil design and enables the creation of novel airfoil designs.Furthermore,it demonstrates high accuracy in predicting aerodynamic parameters of these airfoils due to the ANN model. This method eliminates the necessity for numerical simulations and experimental testing through the design procedure, showcasing notable efficiency. The analysis of airfoils generated by the CGAN model shows that airfoils exhibiting high lift-drag ratios under both flight conditions typically have cambers of among[0.08c,0.105c],with the positions of maximum camber occurring among[0.35c,0.5c]of the chord length, and the leading-edge radiuses of these airfoils primarily cluster among[0.008c,0.025c] 展开更多

To improve the cruise flight performance of aircraft, two new configurations of plasma actuators(grid-type and super-dense array) were investigated to reduce the turbulent skin friction drag of a low-speed airfoil. The induced jet characteristics of the two actuators in quiescent air were diagnosed with high-speed particle image velocimetry(PIV), and their drag reduction efficiencies were examined under different operating conditions in a wind tunnel. The results showed that the grid-type plasma actuator was capable of producing a wall-normal jet array(peak magnitude: 1.07 m/s) similar to that generated in a micro-blowing technique, while the superdense array plasma actuator created a wavy wall-parallel jet(magnitude: 0.94 m/s) due to the discrete spanwise electrostatic forces. Under a comparable electrical power consumption level, the super-dense array plasma actuator array significantly outperformed the grid-type configuration, reducing the total airfoil friction drag by approximately 22% at a free-stream velocity of 20 m/s.The magnitude of drag reduction was proportional to the dimensionless jet velocity ratio(r), and a threshold r = 0.014 existed under which little impact on airfoil drag could be discerned. 展开更多

For a complex flow about multi-element airfoils a mixed grid method is set up. C-type grids are produced on each element′s body and in their wakes at first, O-type grids are given in the outmost area, and H-type grids are used in middle additional areas. An algebra method is used to produce the initial grids in each area. And the girds are optimized by elliptical differential equation method. Then C-O-H zonal patched grids around multi-element airfoils are produced automatically and efficiently. A time accurate finite-volume integration method is used to solve the compressible laminar and turbulent Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations on the grids. Computational results prove the method to be effective. 展开更多

To avoid the aerodynamic performance loss of airfoil at non-design state which often appears in single point design optimization, and to improve the adaptability to the uncertain factors in actual flight environment, a two-dimensional stochastic airfoil optimization design method based on neural networks is presented. To provide highly efficient and credible analysis, four BP neural networks are built as surrogate models to predict the airfoil aerodynamic coefficients and geometry parameter. These networks are combined with the probability density function obeying normal distribution and the genetic algorithm, thus forming an optimization design method. Using the method, for GA(W)-2 airfoil, a stochastic optimization is implemented in a two-dimensional flight area about Mach number and angle of attack. Compared with original airfoil and single point optimization design airfoil, results show that the two-dimensional stochastic method can improve the performance in a specific flight area, and increase the airfoil adaptability to the stochastic changes of multiple flight parameters. 展开更多

The flow around airfoil NACA0012 enwrapped by the body-fitted grid is simulated by a coupled doubledistribution-function (DDF) lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Firstly, the method is tested by simulating the low Reynolds number flow at Ma =0. 5,a=0. 0, Re=5 000. Then the simulation of flow around the airfoil is carried out at Ma:0. 5, 0. 85, 1.2; a=-0.05, 1.0, 0.0, respectively. And a better result is obtained by using a local refined grid. It reduces the error produced by the grid at Ma=0. 85. Though the inviscid boundary condition is used to avoid the problem of flow transition to turbulence at high Reynolds numbers, the pressure distribution obtained by the simulation agrees well with that of the experimental results. Thus, it proves the reliability of the method and shows its potential for the compressible flow simulation. The suecessful application to the flow around airfoil lays a foundation of the numerical simulation of turbulence. 展开更多

An experimental investigation on airfoil (NACA64-215) shock control is performed by plasma aerodynamic actuation in a supersonic tunnel (Ma -= 2). The results of schlieren and pressure measurement show that when plasma aerodynamic actuation is applied, the position moves forward and the intensity of shock at the head of the airfoil weakens. With the increase in actuating voltage, the total pressure measured at the head of the airfoil increases, which means that the shock intensity decreases and the control effect increases. The best actuation effect is caused by upwind-direction actuation with a magnetic field, and then downwind-direction actuation with a magnetic field, while the control effect of aerodynamic actuation without a magnetic field is the most inconspicuous. The mean intensity of the normal shock at the head of the airfoil is relatively decreased by 16.33%, and the normal shock intensity is relatively reduced by 27.5% when 1000 V actuating voltage and upwind-direction actuation are applied with a magnetic field. This paper theoretically analyzes the Joule heating effect generated by DC discharge and the Lorentz force effect caused by the magnetic field. The discharge characteristics are compared for all kinds of actuation conditions to reveal the mechanism of shock control by plasma aerodynamic actuation. 展开更多

The dynamics character of a two degree-of-freedom aeroelastic airfoil with combined freeplay and cubic stiffness nonlinearities in pitch submitted to supersonic and hypersonic flow has been gaining significant attention. The Poincare mapping method and Floquet theory are adopted to analyse the limit cycle oscillation flutter and chaotic motion of this system. The result shows that the limit cycle oscillation flutter can be accurately predicted by the Floquet multiplier. The phase trajectories of both the pitch and plunge motion are obtained and the results show that the plunge motion is much more complex than the pitch motion. It is also proved that initial conditions have important influences on the dynamics character of the airfoil system. In a certain range of airspeed and with the same system parameters, the stable limit cycle oscillation, chaotic and multi-periodic motions can be detected under different initial conditions. The figure of the Poincare section also approves the previous conclusion. 展开更多

Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD)/computational eleetromagnetics method (CEM) coupling method and surrogate model optimization techniques, an integration design method about aerodynamic/stealth characteristics of airfoil is established. The O-type body-fitted and orthogonal grid around airfoil is first generated by using the Poisson equations, in which the points per wave and the normal range satisfy the aerodynamic and electromagnetic calculation accuracy requirement. Then the aerodynamic performance of airfoil is calculated by sol- ving the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations with Baldwin-Lomax (B-L) turbulence model. The stealth characteristics of airfoil are simulated by using finite volume time domain (FVTD) method based on the Maxwell's equations, Steger-Warming flux splitting and the third-order MUSCL scheme. In addition, based upon the surrogate model optimization technique with full factorial design (FFD) and radial basis function (RBF), an integration design about aerodynamic/stealth characteristics of rotor airfoil is conducted by employing the CFD/CEM coupling meth- od. The aerodynamic/stealth characteristics of NACA series airfoils with different maximum thickness and camber combinations are discussed. Finally, by choosing suitable lift-to-drag ratio and radar cross section (RCS) ampli- tudes of rotor airfoil in four important scattering regions as the objective function and constraint, the compromised airfoil with high lift-to-drag ratio and low scattering characteristics is designed via systemic and comprehensive ana- lyses. 展开更多

Wind turbine blades are inevitable to be eroded in wind-sand environment,so it is crucial to identify the flow conditions under which the erosion happens. Here, the effect of the sand diameter on wind turbine airfoil is first investigated. When the sand diameter is less than 3μm,the sands will bypass the airfoil and no erosion occurs. When the sand diameter is larger than 4μm,the sand grains collide with the airfoil and the erosion happens. Thus, there must be a critical sand diameter between 3μm and 4μm,at which the erosion is initiated on the airfoil surface. To find out this critical value, aparticle Stokes number is introduced here.According to the range of the critical sand diameter mentioned above, the critical value of particle Stokes number is reasonably assumed to be between 0.007 8and 0.014.The assumption is subsequently validated by other four factors influecing the erosion,i.e.,the angle of attack, relative thickness of the airfoil, different series airfoil, and inflow velocity. Therefore, the critical range of Stokes number has been confirmed. 展开更多

A hybrid airfoil inverse design method according to the target pressure distribution and the impingement efficiency is presented. The method is developed to design hybrid airfoils that simulate the droplet impingement and ice accretion of full-scale airfoil.Flow field and droplet impingement around the full-scale airfoil are calculated to obtain pressure distribution and impingement efficiency firstly. The Navier-Strokes(N-S)solver is used in flow field calculation to improve calculation precision. The droplet impingement and ice accretion on the airfoil are performed by FENSAP-ICE.Once the target chord or original airfoil is given, the hybrid airfoil geometries can be computed. The designed hybrid airfoil consists of full-scale leading edges and redesigned aft-section.The hybrid airfoil can be tested under full-scale conditions to produce full-scale ice accretion in the exiting icing tunnels which are too small to perform ice accretion testing of full-scale airfoils. Moreover, the ice shapes formed on the full-scale and hybrid airfoils are compared at various attack angles. The results demonstrate that ice shapes between hybrid and full-scale airfoils match well and the developed method is effective. 展开更多

A bi-objective optimization problem for flapping airfoils is solved to maximize the time-averaged thrust coefficient and the propulsive efficiency. Design variables include the plunging amplitude, the pitching amplitude and the phase shift angle. A well defined Kriging model is used to substitute the time-consuming high fidelity model, and a multi-objective genetic algorithm is employed as the search algorithm. The optimization results show that the propulsive efficiency can be improved by reducing the plunging amplitude and the phase shift angle in a proper way. The results of global sensitivity analysis using the Sobol’s method show that both of the time-averaged thrust coefficient and the propulsive efficiency are most sensitive to the plunging amplitude, and second most sensitive to the pitching amplitude. It is also observed that the phase shift angle has an un-negligible influence on the propulsive efficiency, and has little effect on the time-averaged thrust coefficient. 展开更多

An experimental investigation is carried out to study the flow separation behaviors of a variable camber airfoil. The aerodynamic load measurements and related flow visualization show that there are two types of stalls caused by the deformation on the camber:the leading-edge stall and the trailing-edge stall.Static measurements of aerodynamic force show a drastic leading-edge stall, while the serial measurements on an airfoil with camber deformation illustrate a trailing-edge stall and gradual bending-over on the aerodynamic coefficient curve.Under flow separation circumstances, the flow structure is related not only to current boundary conditions, but also the previous flow characteristics,so the quasi-steady aerodynamic characteristics are significantly distinct from those of the static measurements. 展开更多

In order to overcome the efficiency problem of the conventional gradient-based optimal design method,a highly-efficient viscous adjoint-based RANS equations method is applied to the aerodynamic optimal design of hovering rotor airfoil. The C-shaped body-fitted mesh is firstly automatically generated around the airfoil by solving the Poisson equations, and the Navier-Stokes(N-S)equations combined with Spalart-Allmaras(S-A)one-equation turbulence model are used as the governing equations to acquire the reliable flowfield variables. Then, according to multi-constrained characteristics of the optimization of high lift/drag ratio for hovering rotor airfoil, its corresponding adjoint equations, boundary conditions and gradient expressions are newly derived. On these bases, two representative rotor airfoils,NACA0012 airfoil and SC1095 airfoil, are selected as numerical examples to optimize their synthesized aerodynamic characteristics about lift/drag ratio in hover, and better aerodynamic performance of optimal airfoils are obtained compared with the baseline.Furthermore, the new designed rotor with the optimized rotor airfoil has better hover aerodynamic characteristics compared with the baseline rotor. In contrast to the baseline airfoils optimized by the finite difference method,it is demonstrated that the adjoint optimal algorithm itself is practical and highly-efficient for the aerodynamic optimization of hover rotor airfoil. 展开更多

A hybrid Cartesian grid/gridless method is developed for calculating viscous flows over multi-element airfoils. The method adopts an unstructured Cartesian grid to cover most areas of the computational domain and leaves only small region adjacent to the aerodynamic bodies to be filled with the cloud of points used in the gridless methods, which results in a better combination of the computational efficiency of the Cartesian grid and the flexibility of the gridless method in handling complex geometries. The clouds of points in the local gridless region are implemented in an anisotropic way according to the features of the thin boundary layer of the viscous flows over the airfoils, and the clouds of points at the vicinity of the interface between the grid and the gridless regions are also controlled by using an adaptive refinement technique during the generation of the unstructured Cartesian grid.An implementation of the resulting hybrid method is presented for solving two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes(NS)equations.The simulations of the viscous flows over a RAE2822airfoil or a two-element airfoil are successfully carried out,and the obtained results agree well with the available experimental data. 展开更多

An outdoor flapping wing micro air vehicle (FWMAV) should be able to withstand unpredictable perturbations in the flight condition. The responses of the time-averaged thrust coefficient and the propulsive efficiency with respect to a stochastic flight velocity deviation were numerically investigated. The deviation was assumed to obey the Gauss distribution with a mean value of zero and a specified standard deviation. The probability distributions of the flapping performances were quantified by the non-intrusive polynomial chaos method. It was observed that both of the time-averaged thrust coefficient and the propulsive efficiency obeyed Gauss-like but not the exact Gauss distribution. The velocity deviation had a large effect on the time-averaged thrust coefficient and a small effect on the propulsive efficiency. 展开更多

This paper presents a numerical prediction of the unsteady flow field around oscillating airfoils at high angles of attack by solving unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with SST turbulence model in order to simulate the effects of wind tunnel model vibrations on the aerodynamic properties of airfoils, especially high-aspect-ratio wings in a wind tunnel. The effects of the phase lagging between different modes of oscillations,i.e.,the airfoil plunging oscillation mode, the pitching oscillation mode, and the forward-backward oscillation mode, are also studied. It is shown that the vibrations (oscillations) of airfoils can cause the unsteady shedding of large-size separated vortex to precede the stationary stall incidence, hence lead to a stall onset at some earlier (lower) incidence than that in the steady sense. The different phase lagging has different effect on the flow field. When the pitching oscillation mode has small phase lagging behind the plunging oscillation mode, the effect of vibrations is large.Besides,if the amplitude of the oscillations is large enough, and the different modes of vibrations match or combine appropriately, the unsteady stall may occur 2° earlier in angle of attack than the case where airfoils keep stationary. 展开更多

This paper presents an efficient numerical method for solving the Euler equations on rectilinear grids. Wall boundary conditions on the surface of an airfoil are implemented by using their first order expansions on the airfoil chord line, which is placed along a grid line. However, the method is not restricted to flows with small disturbances since there are no restrictions on the magnitude of the velocity or pressure perturbations. The mathematical formulation and the numerical implementation of the wall boundary conditions in a finite volume Euler code are described. Steady transonic flows are calculated about the NACA 0006, NACA 0012 and NACA 0015 airfoils, corresponding to thickness ratios of 6%, 12%, and 15%, respectively. The computed results, including surface pressure distributions, the lift coefficient, the wave drag coefficient, and the pitching moment coefficient, at angles of attack from 0° to 8° are compared with solutions at the same conditions by FLO52, a well established Euler code using body fitted curvilinear grids. Results demonstrate that the method yields acceptable accuracies even for the relatively thick NACA 0015 airfoil and at high angles of attack. This study establishes the potential of extending the method to computing unsteady fluid structure interaction problems, where the use of a stationary rectilinear grid offers substantial advantages in both computer time and human work since it would not require the generation of time dependent body fitted grids. 展开更多
