This study is the result of long-term efforts of the authors’team to assess ground response of gob-side entry by roof cutting(GSERC)with hard main roof, aiming at scientific control for GSERC deformation.A comprehensive field measurement program was conducted to determine entry deformation, roof fracture zone, and anchor bolt(cable)loading. The results indicate that GSERC deformation presents asymmetric characteristics. The maximum convergence near roof cutting side is 458 mm during the primary use process and 1120 mm during the secondary reuse process. The entry deformation is closely associated with the primary development stage, primary use stage, and secondary reuse stage. The key block movement of roof cutting structure,a complex stress environment, and a mismatch in the supporting design scheme are the failure mechanism of GSERC.A controlling ideology for mining states, including regional and stage divisions, was proposed. Both dynamic and permanent support schemes have been implemented in the field.Engineering practice results indicate that the new support scheme can efficiently ensure long-term entry safety and could be a reliable approach for other engineering practices. 展开更多

Conical picks are important tools for rock mechanical excavation.Mean cutting force(MCF)of conical pick determines the suitability of the target rock for mechanical excavation.Accurate evaluation of MCF is important for pick design and rock cutting. This study proposed hybrid methods composed of boosting trees and Bayesian optimization(BO)for accurate evaluation of MCF.220 datasets including uniaxial compression strength, tensile strength, tip angle(θ),attack angle, and cutting depth, were collected.Four boosting trees were developed based on the database to predict MCF.BO optimized the hyper-parameters of these boosting trees.Model evaluation suggested that the proposed hybrid models outperformed many commonly utilized machine learning models. The hybrid model composed of BO and categorical boosting(BO-CatBoost)was the best. Its outstanding performance was attributed to its advantages in dealing with categorical features(θincluded 6 types of angles and could be considered as categorical features).A graphical user interface was developed to facilitate the application of BO-CatBoost for the estimation of MCF.Moreover, the influences of the input parameters on the model and their relationship with MCF were analyzed.Whenθincreased from 80°to 90°,it had a significant contribution to the increase of MCF. 展开更多

In many fields of high-tech industry the ultra-t hi n wall parts are employed. In this paper the experiments were carried out to dis cuss the surface microstructure of the camera’s guided drawtube by applying ult rasonic vibration cutting device to the traditional lathe. The influence rule of the cutting condition on the surface roughness was put forward, which was drawn by comparing the ultrasonic cutting with the common cutting by use of the cemen ted carbide tool and the polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tool. The test results sh owed that the ultrasonic cutting performs better than the common cutting in the same condition. According to the test results analyzing, the surface characteriz ation is influenced clearly by the rigidity of the acoustic system and the machi ne tool, as well the setting height of the tool tip. Otherwise, the dense regula r low frequency vibration ripples will be scraped on the machined surface. When the tool tip is set higher than the rotating center of the work piece by three t imes of the amplitude of ultrasonic vibration, the vibration ripples behave alig ht; they turn light and shade alternatively when the tool tip is lower than the rotating center of the work piece by three times of the amplitude of ultrasonic vibration. According to the test result analyzing, the following conclusions are put forward: 1) The surface roughness in ultrasonic cutting is better than that in common cutting. Under a one third critical cutting velocity, the value of th e surface roughness in ultrasonic cutting rise slightly along with the cutting v elocity, while in common cutting it decreases contrast to the cutting velocity; the curves of the surface roughness in ultrasonic cutting and common cutting see m to be alike, both increase along with the feed rate and the cutting depth, but the value in ultrasonic cutting is smaller in the same condition.2) The influen ce of the coolant on the surface roughness cannot be ignored. The kerosene can b e employed to improve the surface roughness in ultrasonic machining.3) In ultras onic cutting process of aluminum alloy ultra-thin wall work piece, the PCD tool performs better than the cemented carbide tools.4) The vibration ripples result from the not enough rigidity of the acoustic system and the improper setting he ight of the tool tip. The departure of the tool tip from the rotating center of the work piece to some extent causes the vibration ripples on the machined surfa ce. 展开更多

Pursuing the green manufacturing (GM) of products i s very beneficial in the alleviation of environment burdens. In order to reap such benefits, green manufacturing is involved in every aspect of manufacturing proc esses. During the machining process, cutting fluid is one of the main roots of e nvironmental pollution. And how to make an optimal selection for cutting fluid f or GM is an important path to reduce the environmental pollution. The objective factors of decision-making problems in the traditional selection of cutting flu id are usually two: quality and cost. But from the viewpoint of GM, environmenta l impact (E) should be considered together. In this paper, a multi-object d ecision-making model of cutting fluid selection for GM is put forward, in which the objects of Quality (Q), Cost(C) and Environmental impact (E) are considered together. In this model, E means to minimize the environmental impact, Q means to maximize the quality and C means to minimize the cost. Each objective is anal yzed in detail too. A case study on a decision-making problem of cutting fluid selection in a gear hobbing process is analyzed, and the result shows the model is practical. 展开更多

Based on the deep understanding of the requirements of cutting conditions on ceramic tools, a design model for functionally gradient ceramic tool materials with symmetrical composition distribution was presented in this paper, according to which an Al 2O 3-TiC functionally gradient ceramic tool material FG-1 was synthesized by powder-laminating and uniaxially hot-pressing technique. The thermal shock resistance of the Al 2O 3-TiC functionally gradient ceramics FG-1 was evaluated by water quenching and subsequent three-point bending tests of flexural strength diminution. Comparisons were made with results from parallel experiments conducted using a homogeneous Al 2O 3-TiC ceramics. Functionally gradient ceramics exhibited higher retained strength under all thermal shock temperature differences compared to homogeneous ceramics, indicating the higher thermal shock resistance. The experimental results were supported by the calculation of transient thermal stress field. The cutting performance of the Al 2O 3-TiC functionally gradient ceramic tool FG-1 was also investigated in rough turning the cylindrical surface of exhaust valve of diesel engine in comparison with that of a common Al 2O 3-TiC ceramic tool LT55. The results indicated that the tool life of FG-1 increased by 50 percent over that of LT55. Tool life of LT55 was mainly controlled by thermal shock cracking which was accompanied by mechanical shock. While tool life of FG-1 was mainly controlled by mechanical fatigue crack extension rather than thermal shock cracking, revealing the less thermal shock susceptibility of functionally gradient ceramics than that of common ceramics. 展开更多

To research the loading charactefistc of rocks with different structures cut by helical cutting mechanism (HCM), three different structures of rock (hard-soft-hard rock, soft-hard rock and soft-hard-soft rock) were built. And each type model was further divided into three types when the experiments were carried out. To reduce the errors of cutting load caused by manually configured rock in each test, the cutting load of soft rock was taken as a benchmark, and the differences of the cutting load of the different structures of rocks and the soft rock were used to reflect the cutting load change rules of the HCM. The results indicate that, the cutting load of only the HCM top cutting hard rock is larger than that of only the HCM bottom cutting hard rock for dextral HCM, and the cutting load fluctuation is larger, too. However, when the top and the bottom of the HCM cutting hard rock simultaneously, its cutting load is the largest, but the cutting load fluctuation is the least. And the HCM cutting load increment is increased linearly with the increase of rock compressive strength. The HCM cutting load increment is increased exponentially with the increase of hard rock cutting thickness. 展开更多

In this paper, turning experiments of machining particle reinforced metal matri x composites(PRMMCs) SiC p/Al with PCD tools have been carried out. The cutting force characteristics in ultrasonic vibration turning compared with that in com mon turning were studied. Through the single factor experiments and multiple fac tor orthogonal experiments, the influences of three kinds of cutting conditions such as cutting velocity, amount of feed and cutting depth on cutting force were analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, according to the experimental data, the empirica l formula of main cutting force in ultrasonic vibration turning was conclude d. According to the test results, the cutting force is direct proportion to cutt ing depth basically according to the relation between cutting force and other fa ctors, which is similar to that of common cutting, so is the feed rate, but the influence is not so big. The influence of cutting speed is larger than that of f eed rate on cutting force because the efficient cutting time increases in vibrat ion cycle with the increase of cutting speed, which causes cutting force to incr ease. The research results indicate: (1) Ultrasonic vibration turning possesses much lower main cutting force than that in common turning when adopting smaller cutting parameters. If using larger cutting parameters, the difference will inco nspicuous. (2) There are remarkable differences of cutting force-cutting veloci ty characteristics in ultrasonic vibration turning from that in common turning m ainly because built-up edge does not emerge in ultrasonic turning unlike common turning in corresponding velocity range. (3) In ultrasonic vibration cutting, t he influence of cutting velocity on cutting force is most obvious among thre e cutting parameters and the influence of feed is smallest. So adopting lower cu tting velocity and larger cutting depth not only can reduce cutting force effect ively but also can ensure cutting efficiency. (4) The conclusions are useful in precision and super precision manufacturing thin-wall pieces. 展开更多

Energy consumption of block-cutting machines represents a major cost item in the processing of travertines and other natural stones. Therefore, determining the optimum sawing conditions for a particular stone is of major importance in the natural stone-processing industry. An experimental study was carried out utilizing a fully instrumented block-cutter to investigate the sawing performances of five different types of travertine blocks during cutting with a circular diamond saw. The sawing tests were performed in the down-cutting mode. Performance measurements were determined by measuring the cutting speed and energy consumption. Then, specific energy was determined. The one main cutting parameter, cutting speed, was varied in the investigation of optimum cutting performance. Furthermore, some physico-mechanical properties of file travertine blocks were determined in the laboratory. As a result, it is found that the energy consumption (specific energy) of block cutting machines is highly affected by cutting speed. It is determined that specific energy value usually decreases when cutting speed increases. When the cutting speed is higher than the determined value, the diamond saw can become stuck in the travertine block; this situation can be a problem for the block-cutting machine. As a result, the optimum cutting speed obtained for the travertine mines examined is approximately 1.5-2.0 m/min. 展开更多

A study was undertaken to investigate the performan ce of PCBN tool in the finish turning GCr15 bearing steel with different hardness between 30~64 HRC. The natural thermocouple was used to measure the cutting tem p erature, tool life and cutting temperature were investigated and compared. The m aterial can be heated by this instrument which using low voltage and high elec trical current, while PCBN can’t be heated by electrifying directly, so the ke ntanium layer coating over the PCBN is heated, so the PCBN is heated and its th ermoelectric property is got by this method. [TPP129,+60mm88mm,Y,PZ#] Fig.1 Effect of cutting depth and workpiec hardness on. the cutting temperatureThe objective was to determine the influence of the workpiece hardness on change s in cutting temperature and tool wear characterize. It can be found from Fig.1 that the cutting temperature show an increasing tendency with the improvement of workpiece hardness within the cutting speed scope when the workpiece hardness i s under HRC50. And on the other hand, it is found that the cutting temperature s how the downtrend with the improvement of workpiece hardness when the workpiece hardness is over HRC50. According to experimental results, the critical hard ness when turning hardened GCr15 bearing steel with PCBN tool is about HRC50. Th e wear causes of PCBN tool have been found out through taking photos on the micr o-shape of PCBN poly-laminate initial surface as well as face and flank of wea r tool and analysis on chemical elements. It is discovered that the PCBN tools a re not suitable for cutting the workpiece at nearly critical hardness, because n ear the critical hardness, PCBN wear at the highest speed. For researching the w ear rule of PCBN tool, the tool wear experiments have been carried on by using b earing steel GCr15 at hardness HRC40 and HRC60 with changing cutting speed. The indexes of tool life equations is gained under two kinds of conditions w hich are bigger than 0.6, so the effects of cutting speed on the PCBN tool are m uch less than that of carbide tool and ceramic tool. 展开更多

The cutting performance of particle reinforced meta ll ic matrix composites (PRMMCs) SiC p/Al in ultrasonic vibration cutting and comm on cutting with carbide tools and PCD tools was experimentally researched in the paper. The changing rules of chip shape, deformation coefficient, shear angle a nd surface residual stress were presented by ultrasonic vibration cutting. Resul ts show: when adopting common cutting, spiral chip with smaller curl radius will be obtained. The chip with zigzag contour is short and thick. There are lots of sheet cracking both on the face of the chip and on the machined surface. That i s to say, the cutting process of metallic matrix composites(MMCs) is not all lik e the cutting process of plastic material. It is akin to the breaking process of brittle material. By comparison, when adopting ultrasonic cutting, because tool contacts with workpiece intermittently in high frequency, deformation of chip i s small, loose spiral chip with larger curl radius is long and thin. The phenome non is just similar to vibration cutting of plastic material. But the chip still belongs to plastic or semi-plastic segmental chip due to the structure charact eristics of the material itself. Furthermore, the tangential residual compressio n stress of vibration cutting is larger than that of common cutting, axial resid ual stress has a relation to the feed rate and residual stress does not changes obviously with cutting depth and they are in the same order of magnitude on the whole. According to the test result analyzing, the following conclusions are put forward: 1) The extruding deformation is serious in common cutting PRMMCs, defo rmation of it’s chip is larger, and the chip with lesser curl radius is short. Whereas, the deformation of chip in vibration cutting PRMMCs is lesser, the curl radius is bigger, and the loose chips are obtained at every turn. 2) The cuttin g deformation coefficient of chip in vibration cutting is lesser than that in co mmon cutting, however the shear angle is bigger. 3) The tangential residual compression stress of vibration cutting is larger than that of common cutting, a nd residual stress does not change obviously with cutting depth, they are in the same order of magnitude on the whole. 展开更多

The drum shearer and high pressure water jet combined cutting system is an effective technology to cut hard coal-rock, but one problem of the technology is the choice of pick and nozzle location parameters. In order to solve the problem, the process and mechanism of combined cutting arc studied and mining seepage catastrophe theory is used to construct the mathematic and physical model of combined cutting hard coal-rock. Based on the model and detailed analysis of combined cutting mechanism, the single pick and nozzle combined cutting test-bed is built to test the main pick and nozzle location parameters of drum shearer and water jet combined cutting system. Test results show that the best vertical distance between the pick-tip and nozzle center point is the sum of cutting thickness and proper target distance in the Y axial direction; the best horizontal distance is the length between pick-tip point and coal-rock surface bursting crack point in the X axial direction. The best incident angle of water jet should be the same as the bursting crack line's angle in theory, but considering other important factors comprehensively, it is more reasonable when the incident angle of water jet is 90°. 展开更多

Combined with numerical simulation, the influence of confining stress on cutting process, fracture conditions and cutting efficiencies of soft and hard rock has been conducted on the triaxial testing machine(TRW-3000) designed and manufactured in Central South University(China). Results are obtained by performing analysis on the fracture scopes of cement and granite plates, the characteristics of cutting force in cutting processes and the cutting efficiency. Firstly, the increase of latitude fracture scope and the decrease of longitude fracture scope are both more notable in the tests conducted on cement plates subjected to the increasing confining stresses; secondly, the increase tendency of peak penetration forces obtained from tests conducted on granite plates is more obvious, however, the increase tendencies of average penetration forces achieved from cement and granite plates are close to each other; thirdly, the cutting efficiency could be improved by increasing the spacing between cutters when the confining stress which acts on soft and hard rock increases in a certain degree, and the cutting efficiency of soft rock is more sensitive to the varying confining stresses. 展开更多

A new technique, involving tool making, clearing, staining, cutting and mounting specimens on slides, was described for studying Collembola taxonomy. It could resolve the problem of observing Collembola glass specimens under standard optical microscopy, because the phase-contrast microscope has not been available for all researchers. A type of micro cutting probe (about 1 μm in tip diameter) was designed, and it made the cutting method go from two-handed to one-handed, which was a huge step forward in the cutting method of Collembola. The micro cutting probe was custom designed for Collembola using two electric grinders, followed by ferric tannate staining with a stable blue color, mounting in specialized solutions and sealing with a neutral quick-drying gum. We also described a method to make glass capillary extractor and glass capillary brush to make sure a better condition of cleared specimens. 展开更多

High speed machining (HSM) technology is one of important aspects of advanced manufacturing technology. Nickel-based superalloys have been widely used in the aircraft and nuclear industry due to their exceptional thermal resistance and the ability to retain mechanical properties at elevated temperatures of service environment over 700 ℃. However, they are classified as difficult-to-cut materials due to their high shear strength, work hardening tendency, highly abrasive carbide particles in the microstructure, strong tendency to weld and form built-up edge and low thermal conductivity. They have a tendency to maintain their strength at high temperature that is generated during machining. The Inconel 718 workpiece material used in the experiment was in the hot forged and annealed condition. The commercially available inserts (all inserts were made by Kennametal Inc.) were selected for the tests, a PVD TiAlN coated carbide, a CVD/PVD TiN/TiCN/TiN coated carbide and a CVD Al 2O 3/TiC/TiCN coated carbide were used at the cutting speed range about 50~100 m/min. Three kinds Sialon grade inserts with various geometry and cutting angles were used at the cutting speed range from 100 m/min to 300 m/min. For evaluating the inserts machinability when high speed cutting Inconel 718, Taylor Formula within certain cutting speeds, an high speed cutting experiment of tool life was carried out to establish the models of tool life by means of rapid facing turning test. The conclusions drawn from the turning of Inconel 718 with silicon nitride based ceramic; PVD and CVD coated carbide inserts are as follows: Studies on tool wear in high speed machining. The thorough investigations and studies were made on the tool wear form, wear process and wear mechanism in high speed cutting of difficult-to-machine materials with ceramic tools and with coated carbides. The major wear mechanisms of nickel-based alloys are interactions of abrasive wear, adhesion wear, micro-breakout and chipping. Optimization analysis on the application of high speed machining. Based on the experimental results, the optimal cutting parameters were determined for machining of Inconel 718 at high speed. The recommendation of tool inserts for high speed cutting inconel 718 were ceramic inserts of KY2000 with negative rake angle and KY2100 with round type, the PVD coated carbide insert KC7310 was recommended for its lower price. 展开更多

The impact of the load on the shearer is mainly transmitted through cutting part.In this paper,in order to get the vertical steering vibration characteristics of the cutting part of the drum shearer, the working condition of coal mining machine is simplified.A simplified vertical steering model and the simplified vibration model of the whole cutting part of shearer are established. The vertical steering vibration process of the cutting unit is simplified into a single freedom and one forced vibration system under harmonic excitation. The dynamic response of the cutting part under sine excitation is obtained by using Matlab/Simulink for modeling and simulation. The influence of the support rigidity and damping of the high oil cylinder on the vertical steering vibration characteristics of the cutting part is analyzed. The results show that the damping of the cylinder can reduce the vibration of the system and the stability of the swing process of cutting the part is improved. 展开更多

Practical techniques for smooth geodesic patterning of membrane structures were investigated. For the geodesic search, adjustment of the subplane of the extracted elements series was proposed, and various spline approximation methods were used to flatten the strip for the generation of a smooth pattern. This search approach is very simple, and the geodesic line could be easily attained by the proposed method without the need for a difficult computation method.Smooth cutting patterning can also be generated by spline approximation without the noise in discrete nodal information.Additionally, the geodesic cutting pattern saved about 21%of the required area for the catenary model due to the reduction of the curvature of the planar pattern seam line. 展开更多

Manmade diamond and CBN are manufactured by the middle of 20th century. Various manufacturing methods and manmade superhard materials were developed later. They were widely used in different industry and science areas. Recently, a new kind of superhard tool material, C 3N 4 coating film, had been developed. American physical scientists, A. M. Liu and M. L. Cohen, designed a new kind of inorganic compound C 3N 4 with the theory of molecule engineering. According to calculation, it can reach or even exceed the hardness of diamond, so material scientists and technique circles draw their attention to it. A high speed steel twist drill coated with C 3N 4 film is applied to the drilling hole process on steel workpiece in cutting tests, the tool life is increased greatly. When the C 3N 4 film is coated on the cemented carbide inserts, the cutting performance is improved, but is not good enough. The data of mechanical performance and cutting tests about this kind of new tool material is given in this paper, it shows that C 3N 4 has a promising future. The anti-wear ability of cutting tool increases sharply after C 3N 4 being coated on HSS tool. Coated HSS drill also has some benefit after being reground. The tool life prolongs after C 3N 4 being coated on cemented carbide inserts, but is not so long as that of C 3N 4 coated HSS tool. When machining PRCM with C 3N 4 thin-film coated cemented carbide tool, the cutting performance is poor and it is much better when machining PRCM with PCBN, PCD compound plates and CVD thick-film coated cutting tool. Some relative aspects need to be deeply discussed and researched, e.g. the existing coating techniques is not good enough and should be improved in the future, the film thickness should be optimized and try to find out the most effective value, the binding force and mutual effect between coated film and substrate need to be studied furtherly, etc. 展开更多

The high-speed steel cutting tool has advantaged i n modern cutting tool for its preferable synthetical performance, especially, in a pplication of complicated cutting tools. Therefore, the study of the high-speed steel cutting tools that occupied half of cutting tools has become an importa nt way of studying on modern cutting technology. The cutting performance of hi gh speed-steel cutting tools will be improved by magnetization treating method. Microstructure of high-speed steel will be changed as a result of magnetizatio n, and the effect of mechanism and electromagnetism. Magnetic domain was re-arr anged under outer magnetic field for the magnetism of high-speed steel. When th e high-speed steel tools were treated in pulse magnetic field, the intensity H of which is get to 19 Kves, the boundary of magnetic domain will be replaced ham mered by this kind of intensive pulse, causing flexibility deformation and elast ic stress. The interaction between the elastic field and the initial dislo cation field will lead to expansion and transfer of dislocation, fining of g rains, distortion of crystal lattice, and increase of hardness. Obtained by expe riment, the hardness is raised HRC 0.6~0.9, it is to whole tool. Magnetized in p ulse magnetic field without measure, too many dislocations will accumulate on th e interface of, and the tool will be brittle. Many factors such as magnetic filed intensity, magnetization time and chemical c omponent of high-speed steel will influence the capability of magnetized cuttin g. This paper, according to the test, analyzed and compared the difference effec ts between the magnetized high-speed steel cutting tool and the non-magnet ized high-speed steel cutting tool on cutting force, power, heat, accuracy, ser vice life and etc. It also put forward the relation of cutting factor and cuttin g capability, and the relation of magnetic parameter and cutting capability. 展开更多
