High-speed photography was used to obtain the dynamic changes in the surface plasma during a high-power disk laser welding process. A color space clustering algorithm to extract the edge information of the surface plasma region was developed in order to improve the accuracy of image processing. With a comparative analysis of the plasma features, i.e., area and height, and the characteristics of the welded seam, the relationship between the surface plasma and the stability of the laser welding process was characterized, which provides a basic understanding for the real-time monitoring of laser welding. 展开更多

During high power disk laser welding, the high-speed photography was used to measure the dynamic images of the laser-induced plume at different laser welding speeds. Various plume features (area, height and brightness) were extracted from the images by the color space clustering algorithm. Combined with observation on the surface and the cross sections of welding samples, the effect of welding speed on welding stability was analyzed. From the experimental results, it was found that these features of plume could reflect the welding state. Thus changes of the plume features corresponded to different welding speeds, which was helpful for monitoring the laser welding stability. 展开更多

During deep penetration laser welding, there exist plume(weak plasma) and spatters, which are the results of weld material ejection due to strong laser heating. The characteristics of plume and spatters are related to welding stability and quality.Characteristics of metallic plume and spatters were investigated during high-power disk laser bead-on-plate welding of Type 304 austenitic stainless steel plates at a continuous wave laser power of 10 kW.An ultraviolet and visible sensitive high-speed camera was used to capture the metallic plume and spatter images.Plume area, laser beam path through the plume, swing angle, distance between laser beam focus and plume image centroid, abscissa of plume centroid and spatter numbers are defined as eigenvalues, and the weld bead width was used as a characteristic parameter that reflected welding stability.Welding status was distinguished by SVM(support vector machine) after data normalization and characteristic analysis. Also,PCA(principal components analysis) feature extraction was used to reduce the dimensions of feature space, and PSO(particle swarm optimization) was used to optimize the parameters of SVM.Finally a classification model based on SVM was established to estimate the weld bead width and welding stability.Experimental results show that the established algorithm based on SVM could effectively distinguish the variation of weld bead width, thus providing an experimental example of monitoring high-power disk laser welding quality. 展开更多

The Al-Cu-Li alloy is welded by using laser beam welding, and the welding wire ER4043 is used as filler metal. The microstructure and mechanical property of welded joints are systematically investigated. Microstructure analyses show that the fusion zone is mainly composed of α-Al matrix phase and some strengthening phases including T,δ’,θ’,β’ and T1,etc. During welding, the weld formation and joint quality are obviously improved by the addition of Al-Si filler wire. The measurements of mechanical property indicate that, compared with that of the base metal(BM), the microhardness in the weld zone is decreased to a certain extent. Under the appropriate welding parameters, the tensile strength of welded joint reaches 369.4 MPa,which is 67.8% of that of the BM. There are many dimples on the joint fracture surface, and it mainly presents the fracture characteristic of dimple aggregation. 展开更多

The evolution of the microstructure and tensile rupture mechanism of laser welds in UNS N10003 alloy exposed to 700℃are investigated.Fine M_(6)C carbides precipitate around the primary eutectic M_(6)C-γcarbides in the fusion zone after 100 h of exposure.During long-term thermal exposure, the size of the fine M_(6)C carbides increased. The eutectic M_(6)C-γcarbides in the as-welded fusion zone transformed into spherical M_(6)C carbides as the exposure time extends to 10000 h.Additionally, the spherical M_(6)C particles exhibit size coarsening with increasing exposure time. The tensile properties of the welded joints are not adversely affected by the evolution of eutectic M_(6)C-γcarbides and the coarsening of M_(6)C carbides. 展开更多

In our previous study, metals have been used as absorbers in the clear plastic laser transmission welding. The effects of metal thermal conductivity on the welding quality are investigated in the present work. Four metals with distinctly different thermal conductivities, i.e., titanium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper, are selected as light absorbers. The lap welding is conducted with an 808 nm diode laser and simulation experiments are also conducted. Nickel electroplating test is carried out to minimize the side-effects from different light absorptivities of different metals. The results show that the welding with an absorber of higher thermal conductivity can accommodate higher laser input power before smoking, which produces a wider and stronger welding seam. The positive role of the higher thermal conductivity can be attributed to the fact that a desirable thermal field distribution for the molecular diffusion and entanglement is produced from the case with a high thermal conductivity. 展开更多

High volume fraction SiCp/Al aluminum matrix composite possesses a variety of outstanding properties, such as high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion. It is widely applied in many fields, especially in automotive and aerospace. An orthogonal experiment is conducted to study the effects of relevant parameters on the mechanical properties by CO2 laser. Then the micro-hardness in different regions is measured. The effects of such parameters as laser power, middle layer thickness and welding speed on the tensile strength of the welded joints are discussed. The experimental results indicate that the maximum of the tensile strength of the welded joints is attained at the laser power of 1 200 W,the welding speed of 1.5 m/min and the middle layer thickness of 0.3 mm.In addition, the mechanism of the improvement of micro-hardness on the weld bead is also analyzed.ing technology, surface tribology, wetting behavior and friction reduction. 展开更多

In a laser butt joint welding process, it is required that the laser beam focus should be controlled to follow the weld joint path accurately. Small focus wandering off the weld joint may result in insufficient penetration or unacceptable welds.Recognition of joint position offset, which describes the deviation between the laser beam focus and the weld joint, is important for adjusting the laser beam focus and obtaining high quality welds. A new method based on the magneto-optical(MO) imaging is applied to measure the micro weld joint whose gap is less than 0.2 mm. The weldments are excited by an external magnetic field, and an MO sensor based on principle of Faraday magneto effect is used to capture the weld joint images. A sequence of MO images which are tested under different magnetic field intensities and different weld joint widths are acquired. By analyzing the MO image characteristics and extracting the weld joint features, the influence of magnetic field intensity and weld joint width on the MO images and detection of weld joint position is observed and summarized. 展开更多
