As a new research field,multimodal discourse analysis is facing a lot of challenges.On the one hand,the status of multimodality in traditional linguistics is questioned.Many linguists argue that nonlinguistic signs such as gestures and visual images are out of the scope of linguistics.On the other hand,the theories and methods of multimodal discourse analysis are still at an early stage of development and have many limitations.Moreover,many researchers have misunderstandings of the field.In view of these,this article provides a brief explanation of the basic questions of multimodal discourse analysis,including why we analyze multimodal discourse,whether linguistic theories are applicable to nonlinguistic signs such as visual images and gesture,what is the scope of multimodal research,what are the main theories and methods,and what are the limitations and misunderstandings.It further points out that researchers need to have the awareness of making their research interdisciplinary,empirical,and application-oriented.It argues that multimodal research should be based on theoretical and methodological innovation,and should aim at solving real communication problems in the multimedia age.The accurate understanding of these questions is crucial for developing multimodal discourse analysis into a new discipline with strong theoretical and methodological support. 展开更多

George Herbert's poem,"Virtue",conveys to us a theme that all material things in this world,however shiny they are on the outside,are flashy on the inside;only the spiritual sublime virtues that human beings possess remain fresh forever.Linguistically speaking,the discourse cohesion of this poem contributes to the expression of the theme of it.Based on the stylistic analysis,this paper argues that the expression of the poetic theme is realized through the overall layout of cohesion of this poem,manifested in rhyme scheme,lexicon,structure and logic. 展开更多

In uncovering the mechanisms of teaching critical thinking in China,scholars tend to ignore the re-quirement of rational thinking in teaching. Based on the discussion of rational presuppositions of critical thinking in Western cultures, this article argues that, while Western critical thinking presets a kind of rationality which is biased to-wards descriptive logic rather than prescriptive logic, the virtue - centered traditional Chinese culture cultivates a gener-al habit of using methods of prescriptive logic. Descriptive logic accounts for “how to get” true judgments while pre- scriprive logic aims at explaining “why a true judgment is true”. Critical thinking education in China should pay more attention to the role descriptive logic plays. The fact that the new - media infomiarion disseminarion is deepening in- tercultiiral communication makes it necessary to implement critical thinking education in China,but the implementa-tion should be focused on cultivating the students* ability to organize discourse in a logical way. 展开更多

We have come to know comprehension better by studying the nature and characteristics of reading processes and by weighing the pros and cons of different reading theories and their influence on the teaching of reading. But in China, unfortunately, few achievements have been made in the field of reading theory research. Thus, in order to ameliorate our reading teaching, it is urgent for us to set up our own system of reading theories. The author, after studying carefully the present reading models in China and by absorbing the quintessence of foreign reading theories, ventures to suggest the “discourse word discourse” model. The model gives full thought to the characteristics of Chinese college students and thus suits a reading classroom in China better. However, the comprehension factors involved in the model are far from exhaustive and the model itself leaves much room for modification and addition.\; 展开更多
