Performance optimization of a SERF atomic magnetometer based on flat-top light beam

We explore the impact of pumping beams with different transverse intensity profiles on the performance of the spinexchange relaxation-free(SERF) atomic magnetometers(AMs). We conduct experiments comparing the traditional Gaussian optically-pumped AM with that utilizing the flat-top optically-pumped(FTOP) method. Our findings reveal that the FTOP-based approach outperforms the conventional method, exhibiting a larger response, a narrower magnetic resonance linewidth, and a superior low-frequency noise performance. Specifically, the use of FTOP method leads to a 16% enhancement in average sensitivity within 1 Hz–30 Hz frequency range. Our research emphasizes the significance of achieving transverse polarization uniformity in AMs, providing insights for future optimization efforts and sensitivity improvements in miniaturized magnetometers. 展开更多

原子磁强计、激光冷却等技术需要将激光频率稳定在远离原子跃迁频率几兆赫兹的大失谐处,法拉第旋光光谱稳频方法能够实现远共振线的大失谐处的稳频,但是存在稳频点调节不便的问题。在法拉第旋光光谱稳频方法的基础上进行改进,提出了一... 原子磁强计、激光冷却等技术需要将激光频率稳定在远离原子跃迁频率几兆赫兹的大失谐处,法拉第旋光光谱稳频方法能够实现远共振线的大失谐处的稳频,但是存在稳频点调节不便的问题。在法拉第旋光光谱稳频方法的基础上进行改进,提出了一种快速精确调节稳频点的远共振线激光稳频方法,能够在几十至几百兆赫兹范围内对稳频点频率进行快速精确的调节。基于该方法使失谐为-6.2 GHz的稳频点精确频移130 MHz,并实现频率漂移3.3 MHz/h,波动均方根值0.6 MHz/h的激光频率稳定度,满足原子磁强计对失谐及频率稳定性的要求。另外,分析了温度对该稳频方法的影响,推导了预估稳频点频率的物理参数,并将温度调节和声光调制器(AOM)调节相结合,以更好地实现在远共振线大失谐处对激光频率的长期稳定和精确控制。 展开更多

Atomic magnetometer (AM) operated in a spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) regime features superior sensitivity and non-cryogenic operation, and thus is competitive with the best superconducting quantum interference devices. Previously, SERF AM with fT/Hz1/2 level sensitivity commonly acted as a single-axis sensor. Here we demonstrate a dual-axis SERF AM capable of simultaneously and independently detecting x-and y-field components with a sensitivity of 20 fT/Hz1/2. As there is no necessity to worry about the cross-talk effects arising from field modulations, the dual-axis scheme proposed here is of particular interest to AM array and hence the biomagnetic applications. 展开更多

We present a 397-nm frequency-doubling system with a quasi-phase-matched KTP crystal(PPKTP)which features tunable,narrow linewidth,high power,and excellent mechanical stability.Using 20-mm and 30-mm-long PPKTP crystals,we establish two experimental setups based on different external cavity parameters.By testing the beat signal of these two lasers,the linewidth for the system is measured to be less than 2.5 MHz.The maximum power of blue light can be achieved up to 40 mW.With these performance characteristics,the constructed blue laser system is useful for applications in cold atom physics and precision measurements. 展开更多

By comparing the relationship of the different current supply and delay time versus the ultimate velocity of the atom, we theoretically predict the method of accelerating the gases to an expected velocity. The total effective spin-exchange relaxation of naturally abundant Rb in a K–Rb–21Ne comagnetometer is analyzed,and the results show that the coexistence of 87Rb and 85Rb isotopes in the same volume can lead to a large extra spinexchange broadening compared to pure 87Rb.This broadening mainly comes from the contribution of the equivalent reduction in the Rb spin-exchange rate.On this basis,an approximate relaxation model is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to be more accurate than that from a previous work.This study also provides a method for determining the properties of alkali-metal vapor cells. 展开更多

An elongated trap potential for cold atoms is designed based on a quadrupole-Ioffe configuration.Phase fluctuations in a Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC),which is confined by the trap,are studied.We simulate the atom density distribution induced by fluctuation after time of flight from this elongated trap potential and study the temperature measurement method related to the distribution.Furthermore,taking advantage of the tight confinement and radio frequency dressing technique,we propose a double well potential for splitting BECs.Our results are helpful for improving understanding of low-dimensional quantum gases and provide important guidance for atomic interferometry. 展开更多

We demonstrate an experimental method for the in situ temperature measurement of atomic vapor using the saturated absorption spectrum. By separately manipulating the frequency of the pump and probe beams, the position of the crossover peaks can move along the spectrum. Different velocity classes of atoms contribute to the crossover during the movement. We study the relationship between the intensity change of peaks and vapor temperature. Our experimental result around room temperature shows a deviation of less than 0.3 K. Compared with traditional thermometry using absorption spectroscopy, higher accuracy can theoretically be achieved with real-time thermometry. 展开更多

We experimentally study the dynamic characteristics of a miniaturized spin-exchange relaxation-free(SERF) magnetometer based on uniform light field. The ceramic ferrule is used to expand the Gaussian beam to improve light intensity uniformity, while the volume of the sensor is also reduced. This scheme makes the magnetometer have better sensitivity when the detected light intensity is less than 3.16 m W/cm^(2) at 120℃. When the temperature rises to 150℃ the sensitivity under the action of uniform light field is 18.5 f T/Hz^(1/2). The bandwidth of the sensor remains at the original level and meets application needs. The proposed structure improves transverse polarization uniformity within the miniaturized sensor, which is ideal for the magnetoencephalography and magnetocardiography imaging systems. 展开更多

In this study, a multi-peak fitting approach is first proposed to fit the two-photon transition spectrum which overlaps with the neighboring transition in Rb-87. The multi-peak fitting approach is used to eliminate the frequency shift affected by the neighboring transition. With locking the carrier envelope offset frequency at 1/4 repetition frequency, the transition frequency is measured to be 770569132739.9 +/- 5.8 kHz, which agrees well with the previous result recommended by Comite International des Poids et Mesures. 展开更多

We study the quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator of ultracold atoms in a threedimensional optical lattice with adjustable filling factors.Based on the density-adjustable Bose-Einstein condensate we prepared,the excitation spectrum in the superfluid and the Mott insulator regime is measured with different ensemble-averaged filling factors.We show that for the superfluid phase,the center of the excitation spectrum is positively correlated with the ensemble-averaged filling factor,indicating a higher sound speed of the system.For the Mott insulator phase,the discrete feature of the excitation spectrum becomes less pronounced as the ensemble-averaged filling factor increases,implying that it is harder for the system to enter the Mott insulator regime with higher filling factors.The ability to manipulate the filling factor affords further potential in performing quantum simulation with cold atoms trapped in optical lattices. 展开更多

We study the decoherence of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from condensed atoms without confinement,by using two same pumping pulses with an interval time.The first pulse is to establish a matter-wave grating,and the coherence between different momentum modes is measured by the second pulse after a variable interval time.Different from the case in the trap,the distruction of the grating owing to the phase perturbation is very fast,and the superradiant process is inhibited very soon afterwards for released atoms.A semi-classical model is applied to simulate this phase perturbation,and the calculation agrees with our experimental results. 展开更多

We report the experimental observation of two-dimensional Talbot effect when a resonance plane wave interacts with a two-dimensional atomic density grating generated by standing wave manipulation of ultracold Bose gases. Clear self-images of the grating and sub-images with reversed phase or fractal patterns are observed. By calculating the autocorrelation functions of the images, the behavior of periodic Talbot images is studied. The Talbot effect with two-dimensional atomic density grating expands the applications of the Talbot effect in a wide variety of research fields. 展开更多
