Metallic glasses, a new class of amorphous materials, have attracted a great deal of interests due to their exceptional properties. In recent years, our understanding of metallic glasses increases dramatically, thanks to the development of advanced instrumentation, such as in situ x-ray and neutron scattering. In this article, we provide a brief review of recent progress in study of the structure of metallic glasses. In particular, we will emphasize, from the scattering perspective, the multiscale structures of metallic glasses, i.e., short-to-medium range atomic packing, and phase transitions in the supercooled liquid region, e.g., crystallization and liquid-to-liquid phase transition. We will also discuss, based on the understanding of their structures and phase stability, the mechanical and magnetic properties of metallic glasses.展开更多

Factors influencing of the evaluation effect of thismethod are analyzed and the effectiveness of this method is verified by a simulation example. By using the Monte Carlo simu-lation method and the physical model of bulk-volume rock, the relationship between s f and CO_(2) saturation is studied, and thesaturation interpretation model is established. The influences of formation temperature and pressure, heavy oil density, bore-hole fluid and reservoir methane content on the evaluation results of CO_(2) saturation are analyzed. The results show that thecharacterization of s f by the combination of secondary gamma information can eliminate the influence of formation lithology, borehole fluid and methane content are the main factors affecting the quantitative monitoring of CO_(2) saturation, and the ef-fects of formation temperature and pressure and heavy oil density are negligible. The simulation example verified the feasibilityof the method for evaluating the CO_(2) saturation of CO_(2)-injected heavy oil reservoirs.展开更多

The measurements of magnetic properties and heat capacity indicate an AFM phase transition at TN^7K. A large Sommerfeld coefficient of 329.23 m J·mol-1·K-2 is estimated based on the heat capacity data, implying a possible heavy-fermion behavior. The magnetic structure of this compound is investigated by a combined study of neutron powder and single-crystal diffraction. It is found that an A-type AFM structure with magnetic propagation wavevector k =(0 0 0) is formed below TN. The Pr3+ magnetic moment is aligned along the crystallographic c-axis with an ordered moment of 1.694(3) μBat 4K, which is smaller than the effective moment of the free Pr3+ ion of 3.58 μB.PrPd0.82Bi2 can be grown as large as 1 mm×1 cm in area with a layered shape, and is very easy to be cleaved, providing a unique opportunity to study the interplay between magnetism, possible heavy fermions, and superconductivity.展开更多

When blanket modules are arranged~ the gap between neighboring modules and the frames of the modules are regarded as nombreeding zones. On the other hand, neutrons scattered in the non-breeding zones can enter breeding zones, contributing to tritium production. This means that the estimation method mentioned above tends to underestimate TBR. In order to assess the scattering effect quantitatively, we carried out a three-dimensional Monte Carlo N-particle transport MCNP-5 calculation. It was found from the calculation that there is little decrease in TBR for gaps less than 4 cm when the blanket thickness is 70 cm. The result indicates that such a wide allowance of the gap will facilitate access of remote handling equipment for the replacement of blanket modules and improve access of diagnostics.展开更多

In this work, quasielastic neutron scattering was used to study proton self-diffusion in mesoporous disordered and P6 mm symmetry silica impregnated with two concentrations of phosphotungstic acid. Overall, the silica structure had a significantly greater effect on proton conduction and diffusion than phosphotungstic acid concentration, with higher proton conduction occurring for the P6 mm symmetry silica samples. Quasielastic neutron scattering revealed two populations of protons diffusing through each sample, and that proton conduction is limited by the slower of these populations, which diffuse via a jump-diffusion mechanism. Whilst the fundamental jump-diffusion mechanism by which these slower protons moved was found to be similar for both silica supports and phosphotungstic acid concentrations, the faster diffusion occurring in P6 mm structured silica arises from a lower residence time of protons moving between sites in the jump-diffusion model, suggesting a lower energy barrier.展开更多

There have been many theoretical developments proposing various QSL states. On the other hand, experimental movement was relatively slow largely due to limitations on the candidate materials and difficulties in the measurements. In recent years, the experimental progress has been accelerated. In this topical review, we give a brief summary of experiments on the QSL candidates under magnetic fields. We arrange our discussions by two categories: i) Geometrically-frustrated systems, including triangularlattice compounds YbMgGaO4 and YbZnGaO4, κ-(BEDT-TTF)2 Cu2(CN)3, and EtMe3 Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, and the kagom′e system ZnCu3(OH)6 Cl2; ii) the Kitaev material α-RuCl3. Among these, we will pay special attention to α-RuCl3, which has been intensively studied by ours and other groups recently. We will present evidence that both supports and rejects the QSL ground state for these materials, based on which we give several perspectives to stimulate further research activities.展开更多

Compared with ice Ih, it is found that the whole spectrum of methane hydrate moves toward high-energy by about 1.5 meV. Using lattice dynamical (LD) technique, computer simulations of methane hydrate were carried out. In the simulations, four potential models (BE TIP3P, TIP4P, MCY) were employed to calculate the phonon density of states (PDOS). Comparing the calculated PDOS spectrum with the experimental spectrum, it is found that BF, TIP4P, and TIP3P potential lattices give out well-separated translational and librational bands while MCY potential lattice is unstable to do so and this model is not suitable to describe hydrate system.展开更多

文摘The iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeTe_(1-x)Se_(x) displays a variety of exotic features distinct from iron pnictides.Although much effort has been devoted to understanding the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity near x=0.5,the existence of a spin glass phase with short-range magnetic order in the doping range(x~0.1-0.3)has rarely been studied. Here,we use DC/AC magnetization and(quasi)elastic neutron scattering to confirm the spin-glass nature of the short-range magnetic order in a Fe_(1.07)Te_(0.8)Se_(0.2) sample. The AC-frequency dependent spin-freezing temperature T_(f) generates a frequency sensitivityΔT_(f)(ω)/[T_(f)(ω)Δlog_(10)ω]≈0.028 and the description of the critical slowing down withτ=τ0(T_(f)/T_(SG-1))^(-zv) gives T_(SG)≈22 K and zv≈10,comparable to that of a classical spin-glass system. We have also extended the frequency-dependent T_(f) to the smaller time scale using energy-resolution-dependent neutron diffraction measurements,in which the T_(N) of the short-range magnetic order increases systematically with increasing energy resolution.By removing the excess iron through annealing in oxygen, the spin-freezing behavior disappears, and bulk superconductivity is realized. Thus, the excess Fe is the driving force for the formation of the spin-glass phase detrimental to bulk superconductivity.

文摘Phosphotungstic acid is an excellent proton conductor that can be incorporated into porous supports, and nanocomposite proton exchange membrane materials made from mesoporous silica impregnated with phosphotungstic acid have been suggested for use in fuels cells operating> 100 ℃. Whilst the fundamental jump-diffusion mechanism by which these slower protons moved was found to be similar for both silica supports and phosphotungstic acid concentrations, the faster diffusion occurring in P6 mm structured silica arises from a lower residence time of protons moving between sites in the jump-diffusion model, suggesting a lower energy barrier.

文摘Quantum spin liquids(QSLs) represent a novel state of matter in which quantum fluctuations prevent the conventional magnetic order from being established, and the spins remain disordered even at zero temperature. We will present evidence that both supports and rejects the QSL ground state for these materials, based on which we give several perspectives to stimulate further research activities.

文摘INS (Inelastic Neutron Scattering) spectrum of methane hydrate was measured on MARI (a direct-geometry chopper spectrometer) at Ruther-ford Appleton Laboratory, UK. Comparing the calculated PDOS spectrum with the experimental spectrum, it is found that BF, TIP4P, and TIP3P potential lattices give out well-separated translational and librational bands while MCY potential lattice is unstable to do so and this model is not suitable to describe hydrate system.
