Based on the conventional compliance and area methods, a high precision method named the angle method is presented in this work. The interlaminar fracture toughness is determined by measurement of the load and the bending angle at the loading point without measurement of the crack length, and the improvement of the conventional compliance method is made, which is more precise and can be used to general DCB specimen with unequal flexural stiffness of the cantilevers. The interlaminar fracture toughness in 0/ θ(θ =0°,30°,60°,90°) interfaces of two epoxy composites, one being the carbon fibre reinforced brittle matrix T300/4211, the other the carbon fibre reinforced tough matrix T300/3261, is measured by both compliance and angle methods, and the relationship between fracture toughness and the ply angle θ is obtained. It is found that the interlaminar fracture toughness is correlated with the type of matrix and the ply angles near the crack front. 展开更多

Although thermally conductive graphene sheets are efficient in enhancing in-plane thermal conductivities of polymers, the resulting nanocomposites usually exhibit low through-plane thermal conductivities, limiting their application as thermal interface materials.Herein, lamellarstructured polyamic acid salt/graphene oxide(PAAS/GO)hybrid aerogels are constructed by bidirectional freezing of PAAS/GO suspension followed by lyophilization.Subsequently,PAAS monomers are polymerized to polyimide(PI),while GO is converted to thermally reduced graphene oxide(RGO)during thermal annealing at 300℃.Final graphitization at 2800℃ converts PI to graphitized carbon with the inductive effect of RGO,and simultaneously,RGO is thermally reduced and healed to high-quality graphene.Consequently,lamellar-structured graphene aerogels with superior through-plane thermal conduction capacity are fabricated for the first time, and its superior through-plane thermal conduction capacity results from its vertically aligned and closely stacked high-quality graphene lamellae. After vacuum-assisted impregnation with epoxy, the resultant epoxy composite with 2.30 vol% of graphene exhibits an outstanding through-plane thermal conductivity of as high as 20.0 W m^−1 K^−1,100 times of that of epoxy, with a record-high specific thermal conductivity enhancement of 4310%.Furthermore,the lamellar-structured graphene aerogel endows epoxy with a high fracture toughness,~1.71 times of that of epoxy. 展开更多

La2Zr2O7 (LZ) is a promising thermal barrier coating material for the high temperature applications. The fracture toughness and microhardness of nanocrystalline LZ (n-LZ), microcrystalline LZ (m-LZ) and LZ-5mol%8YSZ (LZ-5-8YSZ) composite (8YSZ for zirconia stabilized by 8 mol% ytrria) were studied. The n-LZ had a thermal expansion coefficient of (9.6±0.4)×10 -6 K -1 (200~1000℃) and fracture toughness of (1.98±0.07) MPa·m 1/2 which are obviously higher than those of the m-LZ ( (9.1±0.4)×10 -6 K -1 and (1.40±0.23) MPa·m 1/2, respectively), indicating that nanofication was an efficient way to increase the toughness and thermal expansion coefficient of LZ. The composite LZ-5-8YSZ had a higher fracture toughness ((1.88±0.30) MPa·m 1/2) than LZ, which was close to that of 8YSZ densified by superhigh pressure (SHP). 展开更多

This paper develops a model that only requires two sets of small-size rock specimens with the ratio of the structural geometry parameter maximum to minimum ae,max:ae,min≥3:1 to determine the rock fracture and strength parameters without size effect and predict the actual structural performance of rock.Regardless of three-point-bending,four-point-bending,or a combination of the above two specimen types, fracture toughness KICand tensile strength ftof rock were determined using only two sets of specimens with ae,max:ae,min≥3:1.The values KICand ftwere consistent with those determined using multiple sets of specimens. The full structural failure curve constructed by two sets of small-size specimens with ae,max:ae,min≥3:1 can accurately predict large-size specimens fracture failure,and±10%upper and lower limits of the curve can encompass the test results of large-size specimens. The peak load prediction curve was constructed by two sets of specimens with ae,max:ae,min≥3:1,and±15%upper and lower limits of the peak load prediction curve can cover the small-size specimen tests data. The model and method proposed in this paper require only two sets of small-size specimens, and their selection is unaffected by the specimen type, geometry, and initial crack length. 展开更多

The toughening of epoxy resin(EP)and the interlaminar toughening of carbon fiber reinforced composite(CF/EP)laminates have been widely concerned. In this work, the needle-likeγ-FeOOH nanoparticles were prepared by liquid phase deposition-air oxidation method, and then were calcined under different conditions to obtainγ-FeOOH andγ-Fe_(2)O_(3) hybrid nanoparticles(γ-FeOOH@Fe_(2)O_(3)).Effect of calcination condition ofγ-FeOOH@-Fe_(2)O_(3) and magnetic field assistance on fracture toughness(KIC)of EP was systematically investigated. Then the selectedγ-FeOOH@Fe_(2)O_(3) with the best toughening effect were used to improve the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness(GIC)of CF/EP laminate. The resultingγ-FeOOH@Fe_(2)O_(3) have a length of around 1μm,a diameter of around 100 nm and the Ms of 8.99–45.96 emu/g.After calcinated at 250℃ for 1 h,theγ-FeOOH@Fe_(2)O_(3) containing 24 wt%FeOOH and 76 wt%Fe_(2)O_(3) achieved the best toughening effect.Under a magnetic field of 0.09 T,the KIC of theγ-FeOOH@Fe_(2)O_(3)/EP composite(2.45 MPa m^(1/2)) is 81.7%and 66.7%higher than that of neat epoxy and the composite without magnetic field induction, respectively.Furthermore, the GIC of theγ-FeOOH@Fe_(2)O_(3)/CF/EP composite(0.914 kJ/m^(2)) is also significantly increased by 88.8%and 51.8%compared to that of CF/EP and the corresponding composite without magnetic field induction, respectively. 展开更多

Many experimental investigations have previously been performed and recentlydone on different shipbuilding structural steels where the specimens size and crack depth/specimenwidth (a/W) were varied. A series of interesting results have been gained. It is worthwhile to havea review on the effect of a/W ratio on fracture toughness, and further theoretical analysis isnecessary. In this paper, experimental work in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) wasdiscussed. Tests had been carried out on 10 kinds of strength steels. Results showed that J_i andδ_i. values increased with decreasing a/W when a/W【0.3 for three-point bend specimens and thatshallow crack specimens which have less constrained flow field give markedly higher values oftoughness than deeply notched specimens. However, for a/W】0.3, the toughness was found to beindependent of a/W. Slip line field analysis shows that for shallow cracks, the hydrostatic stressis lower than that from standard deeply cracked bend specimen which develops a high level of cracktip constraint, provides a lower bound estimate of toughness, and will ensure an unduly conservativeapproach when applied to structure defects especially if initiation values of COD / J-integral areused. 展开更多

In part I of this series, experimental investigation in EPFM (elastic-plastic fracture mechanics) had been discussed. In this paper, experimental investigation in LEFM ( linear elastic fracture mechanics) is given. Fracture toughness tests had been carried out on three different strength steels, using both through-cracked specimens with different α/W ratio and semi-elliptical cracked specimens with variable crack size and shape. Results show that the fracture toughness KIC increases with decreasing α/W when α/W 〈 0.3 for three-point-bend specimens, and that for α/W 〉 0.3, it is independent of α/W. Shallow crack specimens, both through-cracked and surface-cracked, gave markedly higher values than deeply notched specimens. However, the effect of crack shape on fracture toughness is negligible. Results also show that the LEFM approach to fracture is not tenable for design stresses where αc is often very small, far less than 2.5 ( KIC/σy)^2. 展开更多

Understanding the size effect exhibited by the fracture mechanism of anisotropic geomaterials is important for engineering practice. In this study, the anisotropic features of the nominal strength, apparent fracture toughness, effective fracture energy and fracture process zone(FPZ) size of geomaterials were first analyzed by systematic size effect fracture experiments. The results showed that the nominal strength and the apparent fracture toughness decreased with increasing bedding plane inclination angle. The larger the specimen size was, the smaller the nominal strength and the larger the apparent fracture toughness was. When the bedding inclination angle increased from 0° to 90°, the effective fracture energy and the effective FPZ size both first decreased and then increased within two complex variation stages that were bounded by the 45° bedding angle. Regardless of the inherent anisotropy of geomaterials, the nominal strength and apparent fracture toughness can be predicted by the energy-based size effect law, which demonstrates that geomaterials have obvious quasi-brittle characteristics. Theoretical analysis indicated that the true fracture toughness and energy dissipation can be calculated by linear elastic fracture mechanics only when the brittleness number is higher than 10;otherwise, size effect tests should be adopted to determine the fracture parameters. 展开更多

The shear failure of rocks under both a static triaxial stress and a dynamic disturbance is common in deep underground engineering and it is therefore essential for the design of underground engineering to quantitively estimate the dynamic ModeⅡfracture toughness KⅡCof rocks under a triaxial stress state. However, the method for determining the dynamic KⅡCof rocks under a triaxial stress has not been developed yet. With an optimal sample preparation, the short core in compression(SCC)method was designed and verified in this study to measure the dynamic KⅡCof Fangshan marble(FM)subjected to different hydrostatic pressures through a triaxial dynamic testing system. The formula for calculating the dynamic KⅡCof the rock SCC specimen under hydrostatic pressures was obtained by using the finite element method in combination with secondary cracks. The experimental results indicate that the failure mode of the rock SCC specimen under a hydrostatic pressure is the shear fracture and the KⅡCof FM increases as the loading rate.In addition,at a given loading rate the dynamic rock KⅡCis barely affected by hydrostatic pressures.Another important observation is that the dynamic fracture energy of FM enhances with loading rates and hydrostatic pressures. 展开更多

In the last years, shale gas has gradually substituted oil and coal as the main sources of energy in the world.Compared with shallow shale gas reservoirs, deep shale is characterized by low permeability, low porosity, strong heterogeneity, and strong anisotropy. In the process of multi-cluster fracturing of horizontal wells, the whole deformation process and destruction modes are significantly influenced by loading rates. In this investigation, the servo press was used to carry out semi-circular bend(SCB)mixedmode fracture experiments in deep shales(130,160,190℃)with prefabricated fractures under different loading rates(0.02,0.05,0.1,0.2 mm/min).The fracture propagation process was monitored using acoustic emission. The deformation characteristics, displacementeload curve, and acoustic emission parameters of shale under different loading rates were studied during the mixed-mode fracture propagation. Our results showed that during the deformation and fracture of the specimen, the acoustic emission energy and charge significantly increased near the stress peak, showing at this point the most intense acoustic emission activity. With the increase in loading rate, the fracture peak load of the deep shale specimen also increased. However, the maximum displacement decreased to different extents. With the increase in temperature, the effective fracture toughness of the deep shale gradually decreased. Also, the maximum displacement decreased.Under different loading rates, the deformation of the prefabricated cracks showed a nonlinear slow growthelinear growth trend. The slope of the linear growth stage increased with the increase in loading rate.In addition,as the loading rate increased,an increase in tension failure and a decrease in shear failure were observed. Moreover, the control chart showing the relationship between tension and the shear failure under different temperatures and loading rates was determined. 展开更多

The dispersion of nanoparticles plays a key role in enhancing the mechanical performance of polymer nanocomposites. In this work, one hybrid epoxy nanocomposite reinforced by a well dispersed, zinc oxide functionalized,multi-wall carbon nanotube (Zn O-MWCNT) and core-shell rubber (CSR) was prepared, which possesses both high modulus and fracture toughness while maintaining relatively high glass transition temperature (Tg).The improved fracture toughness from 0.82 MPa mfor neat epoxy to 1.46 MPa mfor the ternary epoxy nanocomposites is resulted from a series of synergistic toughening mechanisms, including cavitation of CSR-induced matrix shear banding, along with the fracture of MWCNTs and crack deflection. The implication of the present study for the preparation of high-performance polymer nanocomposites is discussed. 展开更多

Fracture propagation in shale under in situ conditions is a critical but poorly understood mechanical process in hydraulic fracturing for deep shale gas reservoirs. To address this, hydraulic fracturing experiments were conducted on hollow double-wing crack specimens of the Longmaxi shale under conditions simulating the ground surface(confining pressure σ_(cp)=0, room temperature(Tr)) and at depths of 1600 m(σ_(cp)=40 MPa, Ti=70 ℃) and 3300 m(σ_(cp)=80 MPa, high temperature Ti=110 ℃) in the study area.High in situ stress was found to significantly increase fracture toughness through constrained microcracking and particle frictional bridging mechanisms. Increasing the temperature enhances rather than weakens the fracture resistance because it increases the grain debonding length, which dissipates more plastic energy and enlarges grains to close microdefects and generate compressive stress to inhibit microcracking. Interestingly, the fracture toughness anisotropy in the shale was found to be nearly constant across burial depths, despite reported variations with increasing confining pressure. Heated water was not found to be as important as the in situ environment in influencing shale fracture. These findings emphasize the need to test the fracture toughness of deep shales under coupled in situ stress and temperature conditions rather than focusing on either in situ stress or temperature alone. 展开更多

Epoxy-based nano-composites can be ideal electromagnetic interference(EMI)-shielding materials owing to their lightness, chemical inertness, and mechanical durability. However, poor conductivity and brittleness of the epoxy resin are challenges for fast-growing portable and flexible EMI-shielding applications, such as smart wristband, medical cloth, aerospace, and military equipment. In this study,we explored hybrid nanofillers of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT)/reduced graphene oxide(rGO)as conductive inks and polyester fabrics(PFs)as a substrate for flexible EMI-shielding composites. The highest electrical conductivity and fracture toughness of the SWCNT/rGO/PF/epoxy composites were 30.2 S m^(−1)and 38.5 MPa m^(1/2),which are~270 and 65%enhancement over those of the composites without SWCNTs,respectively.Excellent mechanical durability was demonstrated by stable electrical conductivity retention during 1000 cycles of bending test.An EMI-shielding effectiveness of~41 dB in the X-band frequency of 8.2-12.4 GHz with a thickness of 0.6 mm was obtained with an EM absorption-dominant behavior over a 0.7 absorption coefficient. These results are attributed to the hierarchical architecture of the macroscale PF skeleton and nanoscale SWCNT/rGO networks, leading to superior EMI-shielding performance. We believe that this approach provides highly flexible and robust EMI-shielding composites for next-generation wearable electronic devices. 展开更多

The creep phenomenon of rocks is quite complex and the creep mechanisms are far from being well understood.Although laboratory creep tests have been carried out to determine the creep deformation of various rocks, these tests are expensive and time-consuming.Nanoindentation creep tests,as an alternative method, can be performed to investigate the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of granite samples. In this study, the reduced Young’s modulus, hardness, fracture toughness, creep strain rate, stress exponent, activation volume and maximum creep displacement of common rock-forming minerals of granite were calculated from nanoindentation results. It was found that the hardness decreases with the increase of holding time and the initial decrease in hardness was swift, and then it decreased slowly. The stress exponent values obtained were in the range from 4.5 to 22.9,which indicates that dislocation climb is the creep deformation mechanism. In addition, fracture toughness of granite’s rock-forming minerals was calculated using energy-based method and homogenization method was adopted to upscale the micro-scale mechanical properties to macro-scale mechanical properties.Last but not least, both three-element Voigt model and Burgers model fit the nanoindentation creep curves well. This study is beneficial to the understanding of the long-term mechanical properties of rock samples from a microscale perspective, which is of great significance to the understanding of localized deformation processes of rocks. 展开更多

Fracability is a property that indicates how easy reservoir rocks can be fractured in hydraulic fracturing operations. It is a key parameter for fracturing design and evaluation. In order to utilize continuous logging data to predict fracability, synchronous tests of dynamic and static mechanical parameters of rocks under different confining pressures were conducted on13 tight sandstone samples derived from the central Junggar Basin,China.A modified formula between dynamic and static mechanical parameters was established.Fracability of the tight reservoir in the Junggar Basin was then evaluated based on brittleness index, fracture toughness, and fracability index. The effectiveness of fracturing was analyzed combined with the oil testing curve after hydraulic fracturing. The results show that:(1)The distribution of oil-bearing formations in the studied area coincides well with stratum of higher fracability index.(2)The critical fracability index is determined to be 0.3,three formations are selected as fracturing candidates, and a thin mudstone interbed is identified in the oil-bearing formation.(3)Well testing curve verifies the reliability of the fracability evaluation method and the accuracy of the modified formula between dynamic and static mechanical parameters. This study provides useful information for improving fracturing operations of tight oil and gas reservoirs. 展开更多

To study the bridging effect of partly-cured Z-pin,Z-pins with different curing degrees are manufactured by controlling pultrusion parameters.A unit cell is selected to analyze the stress of Z-pinned laminates and the quantitative relationship between the maximum bridging force and Z-pin diameter, embedded length, interfacial shear strength and tensile strength is acquired. The Z-pin″bridging law″test and Z-pin tensile test are carried out to study the effect of Z-pin′s curing degree on bridging effect, and the bridging efficiency is defined to evaluate the reinforcement effect of Z-pin.The modeⅠinterlaminar fracture toughness(G_(ⅠC))is measured by the double cantilever beam test. The experimental results show that Z-pin′s co-curing with laminate matrix can improve the bridging force significantly and the fitting results show a linear relationship between Z-pin curing degree and interfacial shear strength. The three-dimensional images of the surface of pullout Z-pins indicate that the failure mode changed from totally interfacial debonding to a mixed mode. Finally, the reinforcement by partly-cured Z-pin can be used to further enhance the interlaminar toughness.Compared with completely-cured Z-pin,G_(ⅠC) of Z-pin with 67.6% curing degree increases by 47.0%. 展开更多

By doping titanium hydride(TiH2) into boron carbide(B4C), a series of B4C + x wt% TiH2(x = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20)composite ceramics were obtained through spark plasma sintering(SPS). The effects of the sintering temperature and the amount of TiH2 additive on the microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of the sintered B4C-TiB2 composite ceramics were investigated. Powder mixtures of B4C with 0–20 wt% TiH2 were heated from 1400℃ to 1800℃ for 20 min under 50 MPa. The results indicated that higher sintering temperatures contributed to greater ceramic density. With increasing TiH2 content, titanium diboride(TiB2) formed between the TiH2 and B4C matrix. This effectively improved Young’s modulus and fracture toughness of the composite ceramics, significantly improving their electrical properties: the electrical conductivity reached 114.9 S·cm-1 at 1800℃ when x = 20. Optimum mechanical properties were obtained for the B4C ceramics sintered with 20 wt% TiH2, which had a relative density of 99.9±0.1%, Vickers hardness of 31.8 GPa,and fracture toughness of 8.5 MPa·m1/2. The results indicated that the doping of fine Ti particles into the B4C matrix increased the conductivity and the fracture toughness of B4C. 展开更多

In this paper, the effect of plastic constraint on the initiation of ductile tears in four different shipbuilding structural steels has been experimentally studied by measuring the J-integral and crack opening displacement COD at initiation in three-point bend specimens with deep and shallow notches. Experimental results of seven groups of different strength alloy steels show that both Si and Ji values of ductile tear from the shallow crack specimens which have less constraint flow field are significantly higher than those of deeply notched specimens. Slip-line-field analysis shows that, for shallow crack, the hydrostatic stress is lower than that from standard deeply cracked bend specimen, which develops a high level of crack tip constraint, provides a lower bound estimate of toughness, and will ensure an unduly conservative approach when applied to structural defects, especially if initiation values of COD and J-integral are used. 展开更多
