摘要
亚当·斯密的An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations(简称The Wealth of Nations)是经济学的奠基之作。该书题名中的短语Wealth of Nations最常见的中文译法为"国民财富"。谢祖钧教授认为将Wealth of Nations译为"国民财富"并不准确,应改译为"国家财富"。包振宇与曹斌先生对此持不同意见,撰文指出"国民财富"的译法更贴合原著的内容、著者的经济学思想和经济学术语的表达习惯。笔者认为,在nation一词的相关语言和译法分析、原著内容理解及斯密经济学思想阐释等方面,谢祖钧教授及包振宇与曹斌先生的相关论述均有值得商榷之处,"国家财富"是Wealth of Nations更为贴切的译法。
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations(hereafter referred to as The Wealth of Nations)is the foundational work of economy discipline written by Adam Smith.The phrase Wealth of Nations in the book title is usually translated into Guomincaifu.Professor Xie Zujun find it an inaccurate rendition,proposing Guojiacaifu as a better one.Mr.Bao Zhenyu and Mr.Cao Bin disagree with Professor Xie,maintaining that Guomincaifu is a more appropriate translation on the ground of the book content,Smith’s economic thought and usage of economic terms.In this paper it is argued that there are limitations with both proposals made by both Professor Xie’s and Mr.Bao&Mr.Cao in terms of their language&translation analysis regarding the word:nation,comprehension of the book content and interpretation of Smith’s academic thought of economy and Guojiacaifu is the better Chinese rendition of the English phrase:Wealth of Nations.
