In 1693,Jin Ji Na(Cinchona)was introduced into China because of its prominent efficacy in treating malaria. It first appeared in the royal court with few official records, and had been documented increasingly both in personal works and journals since mid-18th century, which produced a wider social receptance of Cinchona and related knowledge. The planting attempt of Cinchona in China began in 1874,and the earliest successful planting was recorded in 1876,much earlier than previous academic judgement. In thefirst half of the 19th century, the crude drug of Cinchona was gradually replaced by the synthetic quinine due to the progress of chemical technology and the influence of international market.Quinine was introduced by foreign doctors in the customs for the treatment of malaria in China, and was soon accepted by Chinese western doctors with accumulating experiences of paying attention to the time of medication and using adjuvant drugs in clinical practice. After the 20th century, quinine was incorporated into the traditional Chinese medicine system, and served as an early example of integrated treatment of Chinese and Western medicines for malaria.Based on the research of Cinchona, exploring the process of acceptance of foreign drugs in modern China is beneficial to researches on the promotion of new concepts and medicines in the current global epidemic of infectious diseases.
