In her recent works, French scholar Sylvie Patro reconsiders the concept of the narrator. Drawing on theoretical works on language and narration by K?te Hamburger, S.-Y. Kuroda, Ann Banfield and a group of cognitive researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo, she proposes an alternative way to think about the narrator that no longer relies on the pan-communicative conception represented in Gé-rard Genette’s narratology. She points out that not all narratives are communications and that not all narratives have a narrator. Patron calls her research "non-communicational or poetic theories of narrative, " an attempt to clarify the concepts of narrative and narrator from a new perspective, and to insist on the importance of linguistic and formal evidence for narrative analyses. By doing so, Patron’s work broadens the methodology for narrative studies, enriches the research area and calls for more rigour in the field.
